when applying to schools, would you suggest i stick to schools that have similar stats to mine? should i forget about applying to the more "prestigious" schools?

If you're not willing to pay $400k+ to attend a "prestigious" school, save a few hundred dollars and don't apply there in the first place.

it depends on your own preference. if you really want to attend a prestigious dental school then apply because you will never know what will happen. if your budget is limited and you don't care much about the reputation of the schools, then apply to those you think you can get in.

Numbers are super important in the admissions process but it's not everything. However, if you have a 3.2 GPA and 18AA, forget about applying to Harvard. It can also work the other way too. High GPA/DAT but you didn't shadow a dentist, for example.

If you are 0.1-0.2 GPA and/or 1-2 DAT points off, I think you're fine.


What's also important is the school's in-state/OOS preference, which I think is even more important than the numbers itself, since OOS unfriendly schools will only accept you if you have insane numbers that inflate the average stats of their school.

off topic, but i know most, if not all the schools require a minimum of a "C" in prerequisite courses. i have a C- on my transcript, but it is equivalent to a C after converting it using the AADSAS grade scale. do dental schools go off of the grade on my transcript or the AADSAS grade?

Every dental school is different. Most require C or better and require you to retake C- or lower. Other d-schools are okay with it. You can't look at how your undergrad counts it and I would call the dental schools to find out specifically.
