is LECOM really that bad?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It really comes down to the formal wear, the "no drinks in class" rule, the sterile / strict atmosphere in general, and perceived insensitivity of the staff after some miscellaneous addresses to students.

For me, it's the clown hallway.

Just kidding. But really.

Clown hallway is just asking for trouble :beat:

apparently, the clinical rotations are poor. PBL is also mandatory

any pics of the clown hallway?

Been there. The atmosphere was rather formal and, just, not that laid back. Building interior and exterior needs more color other than grey, black, and white. The clown displaycase feels ehh why is that in a medical school

But LECOM Bradenton boasts about their high board scores rightfully, among DO schools their students score exceptionally. PBL is mandatory but lots of free time to plan your study. If you get in and go there, you will receive a great education and become a doctor

I would have considered LECOM Bradenton solely for the cost alone.

People just hate it for the archaic rules they have... Why is it necessary to have no drinks and always wear professional attire? Just seems silly lmao. It's like a business run by old conservatives with outdated laws. Also, is there any proof that PBL is better than normal learning?? If none of this matters to you and you want a cheap school, then I guess you can put up with the crap...

Lecom B grad here, it’s not that bad at all. I’m sure things have changed since I’ve graduated though.

I believe active learning,PBL and TBL have better retention and understanding than passive learning, i.e., Lecture based. Not everybody learns in the same fashion. There are online tests and tests in undergrad student learning services to help you understand what type of learner you are. I would have flailed in a PBL curriculum. Having said that, with the combined cost of college and med school climbing into 300 to 400 k, it is making more and more sense to explore the less expensive options, if you are lucky enough to have that choice. If 60 to 100k seem a fair price to stay home and zoom in your Jammies, it's your call. My school had a strict dress code, but I went to Catholic school and student taught before med school, so throwing on a tie was no big deal. If LECOMS board scores were poor and their match list crappy, then yeah, it wouldn't be for me.

do you happen to know the average cost for a LECOM grad? it says 70k a year although tuition is only 35 of that
West coast FL you'll pay appx 1000/mo for rent so that's 12k right there, plus living expenses is about another 12k+, if you live frugally. Personally I live in FL in a cheaper area and break even at 3k/mon all told, before debt. However I have a dependent. If you think you can live on less, take out minimum amount of loans.

It is silly, because its LECOM and their crazy.

Current LECOM-B student here. It's really not bad at all. Some people are big time complainers. I felt really apprehensive after reading all the horror stories online, but none of that has come close to reality for me. It helps to have a good attitude when dealing with admin. The main pros for me were cost and location. The Sarasota area is really great if you like beautiful beaches and water activities. I go to the beach most weeks and enjoy having plenty of time to study without interruption. Most of our curriculum has been online since the pandemic, but I've still been able to make friends and socialize with classmates. PBL is alright, but probably not for everyone. This school is what you make of it for the most part. The campus rules don't really bother me much, and there is a large student lounge/cafeteria that lots of people study in where you're allowed to bring food/drinks/whatever. Can't speak to rotations yet. From what I've gathered Bradenton is fairly laid back compared to the other campuses. I don't regret attending so far.

I agree, just go and get your education and leave. Don’t be a whiner.

No drinks? Like no water allowed in the classrooms?

Also what is this clown hallway?
No food or drinks allowed except for the cafeteria. Clown hallway is lined with clown art as a tribute to the Ringling Brother's I think. I heard they made a large donation to help start the school. It's a little unsettling late at night.

Full COA is about 75k for a first year if you take out full loans.

If you mean saving 80k over 4 years to put up with that crap then yes. Everyone should especially with the rising cost of tuition

Thank you for sharing your opinion!
I have a question about PBL. You said it is not for everyone. What do you find particularly challenging? Would you prefer lecture based approach? Did you choose it, but not got it?

I’m NOT a LECOM med student but I am in their medical master’s program. We are mostly lecture based but we do take a mini version of PBL in both our semesters to prepare us for the medical school version. It’s not for everyone in the sense that you have to be responsible for your own learning. You’re not given PowerPoints to study off and feel confident for the exam. You’re supposed to read assigned textbooks based on the patient cases you’re presented. Eventually you’ll have a list of chapters that will be on the exam but this is not given until after the cases are finished. Everything in the assigned chapters and the patient case is fair game for the exam. In other words you have to be on top of yourself. If you’re someone that has good time management, you’ll be fine. This forces active learning, but again it’s not for everyone.

I agree with Avello15. The lack of structure is pretty stressful at first. I had other options but chose LECOM-B mainly for the cost and location. I think I might do better with some structure, because with PBL you're reading chapters from like 5-7 different texts all at once and it feels a little disorganized. Plus, reading textbooks is a really slow way to study for me (it's pretty comprehensive though). I'm about to finish my first semester, and things are going ok.

Avello15, Orville, thank you for replying. It sounds like the majority of applicants would prefer lecture-based learning, no? So, the competition is probably higher for that and then whoever did not get LDP, gets PBL? Is that how it often works?

PBL is your only option at LECOM-B. I have no experience with the other campuses since I never applied to them and was not a part of the masters program.

Orville,
Erie is the only campus offering LDP. Did you apply to LECOM-B because you wanted to be in Florida?

Yep, I only applied to schools in locations I wanted to live in, and Erie didn't really appeal to me.
