Hello!
I am from Canada and i was wondering if my DAT marks are too low:

RC 17
Bio 19
Chem 19
Perception 19
Carving 8

I recently got my GPA verified and here it is:

BCP - 3.86
Sciences - 3.86
Non Sciences - 3.89
Cumulative - 3.87

I just wanted to know how safe i am. Please let me know!

Thanks in advance

I havnt heard about the carving portion. What exactly do you carve?

they only have carving in america at lsu, i believe you have to carve a big piece of chalk

carving 8?
or was it a typo??

canadian schools have a cut off for carving, it's usually somewhere aroun 13

did you break the soap?

you get a cylindrical piece of soap and have to carve it into certain dimensions. this is the most important aspect of the DAT for most Canadian schools.

hehe ya i did break the soap.. i am retaking the dat just for that , but its in november...

i really do hope they dont heckle me about the carving... although my other marks arent steller

your DAT scores are probably too low for canadian schools, you definitely have to be in the 20's... but canadian schools don't need your marks until january, so re-writing in november is no problem ...

and i don't think most US schools even look at carving scores, so i think you'll be OK!

How important are extracurriculars and job shadowing vs marks?

Will those help a lot in the selection process?

i know american dental schools don't really care about carving. But if you have anything on ur application that is extremely bad and it stands out..like if you have excellent everything but one bad reference, it can ruin the whole application.
and 8 is an extremely low score, and a single digit score on dat does stand out...
my guess is at least some schools will pay attention to it, because it's (normally) very unlikely for someone to get that low...they may think you didn't care and thus didn't practice, or you are just so bad with manual dexterity that you couldn't do it...these are really warning signs to dental schools admissions
it's just my guess though...maybe you can show you have other manual dexterity skills in EC.

btw, just curious, how many soaps did you practice before the test?

Haha that is what i am afraid of... i did do some practice, but what happened during the test was that i accedently pushed the middle a bit hard and it cracked and broke...in half...sadly
it was kind of ******ed...

I do have some manual dex extracurriculars.
- guitar (i played at a hospital as volunteer)
- woodworking
- VIDEO GAMES 😛

well thats my little story ahha

thanks again for all your inputs!
