i already have a bachelor's degree in a completely different field (economics).. my cumulative GPA is a 2.6... however, i did not take ANY sciences my undergrad years and am currently starting to take the prereqs for pharmacy school.. i have heard that they only really look at the science gpa, but they still "claim" that they look at cumulative. is this true?

another thing, i heard they look favorably upon those who have a degree already and have work experience (even if its in another industry)... is that true too?

Hi chuckcamp,

It depends on the school. UF only looks at math/science GPA. They want to put everyone on the same page, taking the same classes. A bachelor's degree will make you more competitive at any school. Work experience is good, especially if you worked with the general public at all.

there are a lot of post regarding this topic. why dont u do a search?

if you are too lazy to do a simple search, you got some serious problems there my friend.

When this thread was started there were 2 threads on this same topic already on the front page of the most recent posts list.

The question is now: "Will your laziness hold you back?" 😛

For being mean, I will now make reparations. Here's the thread you want.

Now to be successfully lazy AND get paid well for it... that's an accomplishment

Sorry, but unless you go back and retake some classes you will not be very competitive. Try applying to one of the newer pharmacy programs.

A 2.6 GPA at a new school is still not competitive

It could be worse. One of my friends is applying to law school without a GPA. He went to the state's hippie college that uses evaluations since grades are "confining." Let's see who is confined now....

Seriously, 2.6 is generally 0.6 above academic probation/dismissal. No admissions committee is going to be happy about that. BUT since you still have to go back to school for a couple of years and do all your science prerequisites you can probably put something in the "other things to consider" part of applications and get the prior bad grades overlooked, since you will be putting time and (hopefully) good grades in between your current GPA and the applications. Try to keep above a 3.5. Take it slow if need be.

The bottom line is that anyone with a crappy GPA needs a turnaround story. If you don't have one you have to make one by going out and raising your grades for at least half as long as you took to generate the bad GPA.

Next time we get this topic why not just post a link to this thread?
