for days i have been struggling to understand the fact that is it worth paying 250,000 for three years in nyu advanced placement program.250,000 is a huge sum of money and a loan on it will result in atleast 2000 dollars of monthly installment for about 25 years.

i really want to be a dentist but financially, i am not sure whether is it really worth committing myself to such a huge money . it is like having a second mortgage.

can anybody help me understand, how people think they can do it?

thanks

When one quote $250,000 for NYU DDS AS program expense I understand it includes Tuition+Instruments+books+Living expenses+Personal expenses+ health insurances etc all inclusive.

For an apple to apple comparison, is there anyone out there did a expense study about USC and UoP?

In my opinion the although these are 2 years program, the final figure (expenses) will be pretty close i.e. $200,000+. Lets not forget these universities are situated in two most expensive cities in US, LA & SF. I know a prospective advanced standing candidate who signed a 2 year contract for an apartment in LA for a whopping sum of money...lot more than one year school fees.

Yes we, those fortunate to be selected at NYU, will be hard up while paying back the loan, but so will be our colleagues graduating from USC and UoP.

It is not easy to answer celestial's question as each one of us is in a different boat. The decision to pay or not pay that kind of money is individual.
Also the money committed to pursue any advanced standing program (Most of them are very expensive) should take into consideration few qualitative and quantitative factors as well.

I look at this as investment in start up venture (with lot more assured return than many businesses). For me $750,000 (NYU 3 years + Starting your own office) is a prudent investment in USA with a professional degree. As a serious example currently Dunkin Donut is offering franchise in Richmond, VA to anyone with a start-up capital between $750,000 and $1,500,000. and honestly I don't know when someone will break-even after investing that kind of money in Donuts. What I do know that I have come across dentists who borrowed and invested that kind of money (dental school + office) are paying all the bills, paying tution of their children and some of them already have or contemplating expansion!!! All in 5-8+ years private practice. Oh by the way all of them drive expensive SUV's!

I really love to hear some more positive/negative comments.
Thanks,
rahmed

I have friends in india who payed 35 lakhs to get orthodontic seats ,that is
almost 85000 us dollars , COMPARING THAT to 250000 DOLLARS for dds is definitely worth it ,the person in india paid 85000 lump sum amount ,not like in here as by loans .average dentist makes around 10000$ to 15000$ in east in usa ,if u pay 5000$ per month u end up by paying the loan in 7 yrs ,if ever u start a practise that is a different story all together .why do u have to wait for 25 yrs to pay of loans, being a dentist in here?

hey celestial,if ever it was not worth it can u xplain why this rush for advanced standing program in here ,do u have any idea of how many student visa holders try for advanced standing program ? there was almost 800 applicants last yr to advanced standing program in nyu , many from canada even !

why not any PG programs in other countries have that many applicants ?

when there is demand for a profession ,price would be more which is easy to make in this country .
believe me I Know dentist who has paid of their tution fees in 3 yrs of practise .

Everybody have the rights to wonder if this investment is worthet or not. Before you decide you have to have an ideea about what this job can offe to you or not.
Yes, personally I think it is verry worthed but is up to each person to choose.
It is normal that some of us put this kind of Q becouse if you are not in touch with the dentistry here you can wili answer to this.
Have a nice day everybody and let`s try to have an answer for all how are in need. 🙂

hi mekha,
lemme correct you, a dentist doesnt make 10,000 to 15000 when he starts making money, dont hav any such misconceptions, you will be dissappointed later, i am the right person to tell you coz my hubby is a dentist, once u graduate, you work as an associate dentist for some years, coz u need another 400k to start up a new or buy someone's existing practise, and since you are already under a 250k loan, you wouldnt wanna take another one, also you are under the high tax bracket, so after taxes you end up with somthing between 5k-6k a month ,if you hav a good job, and rest you know how much u wanna spend on luxaries, utilities, loans and nourture a dream of independent practise.........
my husband is raised here, did the regular 4 yr dds program, his parents paid half the loan, n it took him 4 yrs to start a new practise and most of his friends who r born n raised here and definitely hav more money than any of us are still worknig as associates, and today me and my husband r under enormous loan after buying a practise.........though his own student loan is around 75 k only..........so it is not an easy road after dds too, but definitely worth it!!that is why i am here too. all the best.........but watch how much u r gonna borrow and plan how u r gonna pay it back......

One thing I don't understand is, what you are investing now is going to reap you money through out your life time. Think about people who are buying businesses for 1 Million. They don't have any guarantee to make profit? But we have. Aslo think about being jobless or work as a Dental assistant in your whole life Vs being a dentist. Think about all other positiveness other than monitory ones. Even if you don't make any money, the kind of outlook, exposure, respect and meaning a "dentist" bring to your life is worth all these.
And I don't agree with your this 250K expense calculation. Even if you don't go to school , you will need atleast 75K for your living expenditure and medical insurancefor three years. (Unless you need to take a seperate appartments and your family has to live in a different place). But for the ones who live in the same city as their school, you shoudn't be calculating livign expenditure.
So it is 175K (250-75).And if you can pay 5000 per month for the loan, you cna pay it off in 3 years.🙂

I would like to know where ur husband is practising , coz it depends on that and the company he works for ,my sister is a dentist in east coast ,she started with a pay of 650$ a day ,or she had a choice of 40% of the production now after some time she is being paid 800 $ a day and the main thing is she doesnt have to do molar rcts and impactions she could refer those to a specialist ,the office i worked for had a dentist from jamaica who makes around 1100$ a day with post rcts and impactions if necessary.
talking abt tax brackets u better check ,there is a loop hole of puting the part of money in kind of 401 k saving the tax ,if ur annual earnings above 150000 $ per annum
well i know a dental hygeinist who works in 2 office makes 5000k PER MONTH here in my state ,IF u have any doubts on this go to google .com , search for any temp agency who hires in south and pass ur resume to them and ask for their pay. minimum pay they would say per day is 600 dollar .

IN arizona its 650 $ a day ,and you prob know nevada its 900$/day (nevada boards is the toughest but).

i would like to know which licensing does he have NERB?

well I wont get disappointed about the pay coz i know the truth and seen the pay check my sis makes !! 👍

hey, just want to share with you something i heard. one of my friend who is practicing in MN after earning the license told me the minimue hourly salary is $45 according to the federal law. it will bring you around $9,0000/yr. but don't forget it is the minimue limit if you are hired as a dental associate or something like that.

Regardless of how you look at this, and regardless of how difficult you think it will be in the future, it's definitely worth it !! 👍

Hi everybody,

Fist of all, it is a very good discussion going on . Finances are the vital part of the whole DDS affair.

Mekha and godbless, it was quite an information for me.

Would like to know more about the things that are being discussed.

Keep it up pals.

Such things should be spoken of elaborately cos not everybody knows all the aspects of money in this regard.

Good day!

hi mekha,
first of all we need to be more open to new information provided and take it in a better way, pick up what u think u can benefit from, and ignore what u dunt like, coz if you speculate too much, it will prevent people from coming up with their natural thoughts and suggestions,we on this forum are free to speak anything we like,.........what you said may be true and the information i provided is first hand coz it is my husband we r talking abt, i agree that your sister could be paid 650$-800$ a day, there is no fixed income for a particular area, so statements likein arizona it is 650$,and nevada it is like900$ a day are funny, coz it varies in the area too, and varies ith the kind of practise you are worknig for or if you have your own practise.information i provided is correct and was for providnig information to somone who could benifit from that, not to arise confrontations.my husband used to make 400$a day when he was worknig for one dentist office and then 800$ a day when he worked with a different kind of practise and now he has his own dental practise and he makes 1200$ a day, but what i was talknig about is that you have to pay back a lot,you have to pay for rent of the condo, you hav to pay salaries to staff, u hav to pay off loans and a lot of personal expenditures, iam glad ur sister is doing good, i wish you well too, hope u make good money like her.of course it is still worth it, and is not gonna dissappoint you, provided we do things wisely, know how much money to borrow and how we r gonna pay it back...........

Thanks friends for providing the inputs, it helps me and many others probably to understand the financial aspect of it. I agree job satisfaction and passion drives quite a bit of it but in the real world finances also play a good part.

Thanks all...for the good info..
cheers..

It will be great to hear from those who just finished school (including international graduates) and those who are battling it out couple of years after graduation.

I know few recent and not so recent graduates trawl this forum. So lets hear from them about their post-schooling real-life experiences. Come on guys, enlighten us.

Thanks
