hey guys-

lets say you are in a residency, and you are trying to help out your significant other get into the same institution as you are in, but not necessarily into the same department. do you think there is any sort of stirngs one may be able to pull once in the system....talk to own pd? or try to meet with the pd from the other program...lets say it being IM or FP?....all with the intentions of an interview offered, or perhaps a position offered?

any thoughts would be appreciated.

yes unfortunatelly i am refering to matching in 2 diff yrs...one after the other...so couples match is out...🙁

any more thoughts/suggestions....thank you!

As far as something formal, I don't think anything exists. It will depend on your connections in your department and their connections in the other department and the competitiveness of your S.O.'s chosen specialty. If I were you, I would start checking around with the faculty in your department and see if they can pull any strings.

Highly preferable to try do a couple's match, in my opinion. Strings can be pulled yes, depending on where you stand with the PD and the rest of the program, the institutions' culture and a lot of other factor. Not sure if that would help though. If trying to match in different years, definitely aim for a place with lots of programs for your S.O. to choose from.

thank You for all your input. appreciate it.

The strongest strings you can pull is to be the best intern your program has. In that sense, they will want to do anything to make you happy and stay, for they know that if your SO is elsewhere your performance will tank.

So work hard, be a jovial guy/gal and make sure everyone knows your SO wants to come there and they may just be very glad to try and help.

Very good advice.

Also, remember that your presence at a given program lets your SO say, "and THAT'S one of many reasons I'm making this my number 1." Programs seem to really appreciate when an applicant can give specific reasons for loyalty to their institution, so your SO should have a leg up to work things from his/her end.

If your PD likes you, try to get him/her to put in a good word with the person who would be the future PD of your SO. Also, she should tell them flat out when she interviews there that this place is her #1 choice, because it's so great, and by the way her fiancee is a resident here too...
