Ive been volunteering for hospice for about a total of 6 months and have had 4 patients in total. Thinking about stopping when I hit my one year limit due to me not being able to dedicate my time to it. Is it still good enough or thats not enough? Like would adcoms even care since its just one year?

To answer your question directly, how many hours have you accumulated?

To actually give you a relevant answer, find and do something that you're passionate about, or at least somewhat like, not something that you think adcoms are looking for or will look good.

To answer the question, yes a year is enough time, but can you talk about your time there passionately? That's what adcoms care about

It is difficult to quantitatively determine how much of an EC is enough. You could work in an ER for 750 hours and not get anything out of it, or you could work as a tutor for 25 hours and get a ton out of it. Med schools want to know why your experience was meaningful, how it shaped you, and what you learned from it. They don't explicitly care about the number of hours, although there is an implicit correlation between length of time worked and number of meaningful encounters in a given activity... this is not always true though, just a broad rule of thumb

dont get me wrong i really like hospice and i wish i could it long but due to how things will be next year i wont be able to do it. But so far im at 72 hours at it but in a year itll be 144 hours.

I've worked as a CNA for an inpatient hospice facility for nearly two years now and its been easily my most meaningful experience I've ever had and I plan to continue for another year until (if) I matriculate next Fall because I love it and I'm a passionate supporter of hospice care. I enjoyed it so much I even got a specific certification as a hospice & palliative nursing assistant. It's what I've built my entire application around besides school and some shadowing. I got involved in a couple other ways with the organization as well. No matter what length of time you do something, it's all about how much you put into it and what you got out of it. I can hospice taught me alot especially how communication is more than talking (some patients just wanted me to hold their hands during their suffering). its just so much stuff is going on and i wont be able to dedicate the time for it anymore. All i was wondering if its even worth noting that I did hospice if it was just a year.

Thank you! that makes me feel better. Some premeds I know always brag about the amount of hours they have in certain EC's and i was just making sure mines is still okay even with just a year. However it has been very worthy of my time. Aboslutely loved it (despite the problems that came with it).

One year of an activity is considered to be good longevity for med school application activities, so it is well worth listing. After you leave, find another active clinical experience to give you a broader base of experience with a different type of patients.
