Is post graduate training required??

#1 I just wanna ask about any post graduate training "i.e. Prelim-Surg" as a requirment for Orthopaedics residency?
#2 I am an IMG, do they require ECFMG certification at the time of application knowing that It will be issued on Aug since I'll graduate in late Jun?

Select orthopaedic surgery, and a state, click on the program, and they will tell you. If you have more questions, you can call the program directly.

First off, it is tough to get a spot as an IMG - just take that into consideration. Then, if you get accepted into an orthopaedic residency the first year (internship) is almost always linked to the ortho residency. I mean this is the first year of your five year residency and it is basically a gen surg year with some "electives." Some people who don't match on their first try will do a prelim surgery year, then reapply. If they get a spot the next year, they may have to redo their first surgery year of residency (Wow, that's painful!).

but what about the other question about the need of ECFMG certificate??
Do you know of a site that provide this information instead of the long search within each program site

another point which i would like to ask about ( really sorry for disturbing you)
I've got 99-256 as STEP 1 score and i am planning to take step 2 within a month

do i have good chances of matching (if we presumed another good score in step 2)even if i do not have an elective??

Some programs will require ECFMG for application, however all will require it to start residency on July 1. Therefore, it appears that you will have to take a year off between school and the start of residency anyway (since you can't start work without it and won't have it by July 1 if you don't graduate until end of JUne) and will have the certificate when it comes time to apply for residency for the following year. So...seems like a moot point to me.

That score will help, but in the end, only about 1% of all ortho residents are non US MD's. If it doesn't work out for you this time aorund, your best bet is to find a FMG friendly program and get involved in some research there. That will land you some connections which may help you down the road.

that ECFMG certificate is really a major problem... but i may go around by applying for a prelim-surgery or research for that year
