Is the interview cycle moving slower this year?

On the school specific threads it seems like major II and R waves are being delayed compared to last year. But on the other hand, some schools (like Keck) are moving insanely fast and have their interview quota almost filled already. What gives?

Well, a lot of them in general. BU, most of the UC's, Rochester, Emory, Einstein, Albany, Temple, Jefferson, Wake, etc.

Yeah I'm not too familiar with how current cycles compare to last year... but I have heard that the UCs though like UCLA tend to have later cycles than other schools.

This is my first year as an adcom so I don't have prior experience with which to compare this year. That said, I suspect there are some aberrations since this is the first year we won't be receiving the multiple acceptances report. There's a lot more guesswork on the schools' side of things and people are understandably being cautious as we modify our acceptance practices.

Personally, I get the same question every year and every year I say no, its all the same. The two differences this year would be the acceptance report being gone and I would have thought that would speed things up. So I doubt that is a factor. The second and more likely issue is while there are likely a few less applicants, they are each putting in more applications each. Thus the total number of applications per school is higher and the workload is higher. I would speculate that USC is moving fast due to the recent changes in admissions office staff as well as the fear and turmoil what the recent scandals may cause.

BTW, I still harass the author of my favorite secondary question which is found on USC/Keck application: what was the most fun you had last year.

So I've heard that the lack of acceptance reports may cause "poaching", which is the main concern. Can't schools just get around this by forming a financial contract with matriculants and hold them liable for the entire first year of tuition? On the larger scale of things, this issue can also be avoided by all medical schools forming a nationwide agreement to start classes on the same day every year (now that I think about it, this idea seems a bit asinine, but if this country can elect Donald Trump, it can do anything outrageous).

1) Trying to hold students the first year of tuition would violate the DOE loan regulations as this was a tactic that the for-profit college/schools were using to fleece students
2) medical schools cant come coordinate their actions in any agreements as that is what caused the issue in the first place. It was this coordination via AMCAS/AAMC that stopped the acceptance reports and rules on "poaching."

But the prior type of coordination was regarding matters about specific students. This would be a coordination on the grader scheme of things.

So, is it only me who sort of enjoy this..... slow pace? I still have 10 different things going on, my colleagues are sending me letters, class preparations, students' emails, approaching multiple deadlines, administrative duties, moving, trying to settle down in a new place and a new neighborhood, house chores..... I am kinda happy that I can put applications aside as for now.....

Personally, I'd just prefer to know where I stand with all the schools I applied to!

Lets be clear.....it is the COORDINATION that is the issue, of almost any kind. It was being looked at as potential restraint of trade. Personally, I think AMCAS was being way, way overly cautious.

Anything that even looks like two or more schools working together or AMCAS calling the shots is worrisome for collusion in the eyes of the AAMC lawyers.

My perception is it's going more quickly, there's quite a few schools that already appear to be done or essentially done sending IIs, and a lot of rolling schools have already filled a significant portion of their class. I wasn't really paying attention to the cycle last year so not sure how it compares but my perception is it's going quickly.
