I just started doing uworld and I'm getting slaughtered. Granted I'm only a 100 questions in, and I'm only doing topics I've reviewed and I'm still only getting 20-40% right. It seems like even memorizing FA word for word won't get you anything more than 50%. I'm starting to feel like a ******.

The real thing definitely felt like UWorld, but that may be enhanced by the fact that the interface is exactly the same down to the color and lab values.

That said, you need to stick with UWorld and learn from it. It conditions your brain in how to use the facts you have in your brain from First Aid. That said, I would recommend having a solid FA background before really going into UWorld cause that provides optimum value IMO.

As I've heard the real thing is like an NBME; Uworld is harder than the real thing, but some people have said your worst nightmare step 1 exam will be as hard as Uworld not harder than that, so granted that most people who study don't get their worst nightmare exam, most exams are like the newer NBME. take those to gauge where you stand then move on to your weaknessses................again these are just my thoughts from what Ive heard on sdn

Phloston, I haven't done any qbanks yet. Do you suggest that I skip Kaplan and just go for UW if I've done kaplan LN?

Thanks.

No. Definitely do Kaplan QBank. You'll score higher. I'm like 3/4 through UWorld right now, and the 3000 questions from Kaplan QBank have probably gotten me about 15-20 additional questions correct from UWorld, based purely on having seen unique info, that I would not have gotten otherwise. Then on top of that, just based on reinforced material / general tactics, Kaplan's probably gotten me another 10-15 or so. The long story short is that I'm at ~84.5% cum in UWorld at the moment, and I believe that if I hadn't done Kaplan, I'd be sitting closer to 82.

Pholston, tundri said that he/she hasn't done any qbanks. Assuming that tundri's early in the studying, haven't you said before that Rx would be better to get the basics from FA down?

I just gave the step this past week and not only did i think it was like UWorld (for the most part), but i also had 2 questions that were almost verbatim from UWorld (one image question and another about AAA).

However, for the multimedia questions, id def suggest kaplan. Unlike UW, the multimedia cardio questions on the step are more like Kaplan bc you can place the stethoscope in four diff places, whereas UWorld just plays a single sound.

Yes, Rx is great to get the basics down. I view Rx + FA as one collective resource. Do your first read of FA, do Rx, then do your second read of FA, then do Kaplan, then do UWorld. Supplement with the appropriate side-resources as well (e.g. Microcards, Lange pharm cards) and the NBMEs.

Now that you say that I'm a bit confused. When I went through Kaplan, I noticed that there'd be cardio questions with four stethoscope icons on the chest, but I never once moved the stethoscope around, nor do I even remember the questions saying you could. I don't recall any of the questions having been unanswerable by not having moved the steth though.

On STEP 1 the heart sound questions are nothing like UWORLD and are a bit closer to Kaplan, but not quite exactly like Kaplan. If you download the practice test software from the USMLE you can see what the exact interface looks like. You are allowed to move the stethoscope to various preset locations (~4) and observe neck veins/arteries as the heart beats.

hmmm, im pretty sure you can move them, unless we had diff qbanks... the kaplan subscription i had was called "Step 1 Qbank Plus" and came with your typical qbank, a physio only qbank, and another something called the IV qbank

but anyways, it's just like how ijn described (which i thought was pretty cool with the pulsations of the blood vessels in the neck and respirations)
