Is there a limit to how bad of an undergrad GPA can be made up by a great Grad school GPA?

Basically, can someone goof off in undergrad (like a 2.8 GPA), get into a Masters program because of a strong senior/junior year (but still have an avg of 2.9/3.0), and still get into a DO school?

let's also assume that the 1 yr masters program goes well, 3.6 overall GPA.

Would this bode well for the candidate or would they still need a 508 on the MCAT to get in?

Basically what I'm asking is...if you get into a Master's program, how much of your undergrad years will be forgiven?

The best thing to do is to not goof off in undergrad, and perform the best you can on the MCAT (preferably >500). But DO schools do reward reinvention. Grad school could offset that undergrad GPA a bit, but I do hear it's best to do a post-bacc and do well in upper division sciences than going to grad school. Are you asking this for yourself, or a friend? Do you or this friend actually have this GPA?

post bacc will help your undergrad gpa a masters will not. while a good masters may look good ive heard there is a degree of uncertainty as the difficulty of a masters program can vary. A good mcat may make adcoms believe you understand the material though but not "make up for" a bad gpa. seek others opinions though.

Yes. I've seen plenty of people do this. You should strive for as high an MCAT score as possible no matter what.

So just to be clear, there's not a certain undergrad GPA that will keep you out of med school if you ace the Masters program and the MCAT?

How's your s/cGPA with MCAT? You can get into Touro Nevada Masters program if your under grad sGPA is atleast 2.9. If you do well in your masters at least 3.25 gpa you will be guaranteed interview for DO or PA.

It's for a friend. I'm doing podiatry school =)

I think he barely made a 3.0 GPA after having a terrible freshman year.

But he's got like a 3.6 in the masters program.

The limit would be the GPA minimum for a given medical school. If you don’t get screened then in theory you have a shot.
