Is there anything else I should be doing with my summer?

Long time lurker here...

Hi,
I'm a rising Junior who only has about a year before I begin applying to schools. I would like to enter medical school directly after undergraduate. Currently, this summer, I'm working on beefing up my volunteering hours which is working out nicely as I am volunteering almost full-time at a nearby nursing home.

I have all the other essentials for a competitive application (GPA, ECs); however, there is one component which I am seriously missing an is bothering me: leadership.

Is there anyway I could secure some leadership positions this summer with the remaining 7 weeks that I have? I know it's not practical to simply become a member of a committee or the president of an organization just like that, but I was thinking perhaps organizing an event, perhaps at the nursing home? Or maybe somewhere else?

I would love some input from the adcoms on this board in terms of what would qualify as good leadership, but also not come off as subpar or simply looking like a check off on my application. I would like to make a good impression, but I would also like to experience what it is like to have some authority before applying.

Thank You.

Anything can sound like a leadership activity when worded correctly, its all semantics baby 😎

Talk with the activities director at the nursing home to see if there are any building-wide events you can chair or co-chair. At my grandmother's nursing home, they put on an every month where residents can donate their unwanted items, and then the staff sets up a mini thrift store that people can shop at with the proceeds going to some charity. Or can you organize some field trips or outings for the residents?

You could also try joining a mentoring activity like Big Brother/Big Sister.

This is what I did; I headed up the 'med return' program at the nursing home I volunteered at 🙂

summer = alcohol and the company of upstanding ladies

Good luck there's still about half of summer left, maybe your town has a 5K or some sort of benefit/fundraiser you could help run?
