First, I wanted to say I am a naturally an extremely outgoing and energetic (positive energy not five year old bouncing of walls enerygy haha) person, but i was wondering if my excitment and energy at the interview could have downlplayed my intellect? I only ask this because they may think I was not taking them seriously, even though I am a gunner at heart.

Here is the story:
During my interview in october, I was greeted with an old fashion good cop bad cop interview. I mostly say this because one of interviewers barley looked at me during the whole thing, except for when she asked her barage of tough questions. "Tell me about your favorite procedure and how it is performed in the most detail possible... more detail..... more detail...." Ofcoarse, I recognized initially that she was trying to see how I responded to tough questions and a stressfull enviroment, so I took no offense and maintained my normal personality. I smiled and answered tentivley as she kept going.... maybe not perfectly since im not in dental school and conducting these procedures, but i did to the best of my abilities. During this time, I was showing body language of excitment and energy while she was very blunt and stern. Do you think she may believe I wasn't being serious enough?

If so what is too energetic or excited, or when are you not supposed to be smilling during an interview haha? Do I just adopt the posture and attitude of interviewers even if they are being very stern?

This was at my number 1 choice school, which may be why I am over thinking this? Where is december 1st when you need it haha?

"AA: 21 TS: 21 PAT: 21
BCP: 4.0 Sci: 4.0 Non: 3.91
Total GPA: 3.96"

That should get you in.

I always go with the advice of just being yourself. While the interview is an important and essential aspect for acceptance into a school, I also see it as your best opportunity for learning if the school is really right for you. If you aren't yourself in the interview, then you won't really get an accurate idea for yourself about whether you really fit in or not. As long as your energy and outgoing personality doesn't hinder your ability to provide a well-articulated response, then I think it can only be a good thing. Interviewers like to see positive energy and excitement, especially when paired with well-spoken responses and smart questions, because that shows that you are actually interested in what their school has to offer.

An admissions administrator from Case Western told me that he just wants people to be themselves...

Thanks for your help, thats what I thought. I was just wondering if I could have optimized my ability to succeed during the interview.

No, no, no. Being yourself is called not having self-awareness.

This whole app game is about marketing. You are trying to market yourself for an acceptance. You marketed yourself on paper with your stats, PS, LOEs, etc. Now it's time to market yourself in person. You need to portray yourself as someone who will fit in well with the culture of the school. Thus if, a school has a bunch of laid back people, then you need to be chilled and laid back at your interview. If the school is about compassion, then you need to show your community service and sensitivity to others. If the school has a bunch of douche bags... then well, you get the drift.

Perhaps this analogy will help. It's like when you're at a bar trying to pick up a girl. If the girl wants a nice honest man, then you have to be respectful and show some heart. If the girl wants a guido, then you have to slick your hair back and wear a wife beater shirt and say yo. If the girl is a gold digger, then you have to pull out your Amex card and buy Johnny Walker Blue like you're a high roller. If the girl likes it rough, then you have to show some aggression and give her a few butt slaps throughout the night lol. For these 4 examples, in the end, you're still the same person behind your adaptive self marketing but you'll score 4 for 4, unlike the other losers at the bar who always try to be themselves for the wrong target audience.

Similar to flirting with a girl at a bar, the interview is a negotiation too. During this negotiation you need to convince the interviewer that you belong at that school. Ones who can understand the market and cater to the market will inevitably penetrate the market (yes, puns intended lol).

It's game time! Bring your A game.

Btw, it's the same thing when you have your own practice someday. Every patient will have different needs. Some want you to educate them, some want to be coddled, some want to talk about family life, and some want you to just shut up and get the job done. Thus, if you can successfully market yourself differently to each patient, then you'll be raking it in. 🙂

Just be yourself. You can't be pretend your laid back if your a gunner. You can't pretend your outgoing if your quiet. You can't show real compassion if you don't care. You can't be funny if you normally aren't. Trust me. The most awkward thing is when a someone tries to be someone who they aren't. And yes, it is easily noticeable when someone is uncomfortable acting a certain way. The exception is if you spent a lot of time learning how to act, but most predents aren't actors.

Just think about those high school nobodies who came into college trying to act like the man. I'm pretty sure everyone notices.

Your chick pick up tips will only land you one night stands!

Instead of trying to fit myself into a school, I'm genuinely looking for a school that can accommodate the unfiltered me.

well... as long as you don't walk in there and chest-pump the interviewers (or high five with loud WHOOOOO ~ Rick Flair)... I think you'll be fine

Of course you can be too excited or outgoing in an interview. You need to be aware of your surroundings and know your place in an interview. There are social boundaries that you should respect when being interviewed. That being said, you should attempt to stay within the confines those boundaries without masking who you are.

Admission committees want people to "just be themselves" so they can just reject the ones they didn't like.

I would love to see a guy raising the roof while moon walking across the conference room where all the interviewees gathered.

True, always be yourself...but showcase the sides of your personality that they will like. Hide your awkward side, hide your sexually charged side. Display your confident, calm, collected side. And if you don't have an ideal personality, then fake it til you make it.

Apparently you aren't aware of the 2-night stand. Amateur.

I was once with some buddies at a happy hour hanging out at the outdoor seating area and there was a group of four chicks standing 25 ft away. Being the distinguished point man in the group, along with a $20 challenge dare, I took on the incentive and moonwalked all the way from our spot to the chicks culminating in me asking one of them for a cigarette (and I don't even smoke). It was a bit ridiculous and hilarious but cool in the sense that the chicks dug my bravery and originality lol. I had my next three rounds paid for haha.
