Hello,
I have the opportunity to shadow my family physician (D.O.) over the summer - he attended my top choice school and would be a very resourceful contact. Is this a bad idea? I no longer see this physician for any medical reasons, as I go to school in another city. Any advice would be appreciated. Be kind please.

Why would it be a bad idea? What are your concerns?? I feel like I'm missing the point of your post, because I don't see a single thing wrong with what you've suggested.

We have to use whatever contacts and assistance we have available to us... sounds like you've got a great start to someone who will help you out and guide your efforts!!!

:luck: Best of Luck!!! :luck:

There's nothing wrong with that. I don't know what you're concern about. You don't need to know the DO to get a good/valid LOR.

I guess I just wasn't sure if it was appropriate to develop a non-patient/physician relationship with someone I've known as my doctor for all these years. I'm probably thinking about it too much -- I should just stop second-guessing and do it. Thanks.

well... i just thought you were going to follow him/her around... not do anything UNETHICAL!!!

If the doctor says it's cool, then it's cool. It's not on YOU to worry about whether THEY want to be friends/mentors to former patients. Go for it... lots of people on these boards would kill to have extensive D.O. shadowing, and never got the opportunity!!

You should go through with it. There is absolutely no reason to hesitate. 👍

Only positve things can come from the situation your describing! I too was nervous for my first shadowing experience, but I loved every second of it. You wont regret it! 👍
