Hi guys,

I want to apply soon and I was wondering if it would be acceptable for me to put one of my high school teachers as my referee. I know this teacher very well and they were also the coach for one of the varsity teams I was on.

Thanks 😉

Can they speak well of you in the present? You're applying soon, so you've likely been a few years detached from high school. Sure, they could say how you did in the past, but what of you now? How have you changed in the last few years? How do they know you're still the same person they had X number of years ago?

Edit: Typo. Player != Person.

Wait, there are referees for medical school applications now? About time. I hope they wear sweaters made out of the tears of rejected applicants.

@Boolean has you on a good path. I think a good referee would be one that can speak about your abilities/work ethic recently. When is the last time you speak to this teacher? What is the nature of your relationship (i.e., how many classes did you have with him/her, did you work for him/her somehow, how did this teacher influence to pursue medicine, etc.)?

Are you talking about your medical school application? You should not put high school activities on the AMCAS (unless they were continued through high school) and you should not use a high school coach as a letter writer (assuming that's what you meant by referee).

I believe it is a typo. Re-read OP's post. They seem to be talking about a teacher.

Eh, "referee"? In the American context we are in under Allopathic Pre-med, he definitely has a right for a troll post. Although technically it's not incorrect.

I last saw them in the summer last year (the summer after my first year of university) and I had 2 classes over 2 years with this teacher along with playing on a team coached by them for 3 years.

Not a troll post btw. 😛

No no, I meant Riki1111 had a right to troll you, as referee is not a very common term (though appropriate) for letter of reference writer.
