I'm going to be taking:

Biology 213 (Cell Biology) with lab (4 credits) - labs are three hour sessions
Chemistry 211 (General) with lab (4 credits) - labs are three hour sessions
Sculpture 1 (4 credits) - require four hours in studio in addition to two hour lecture

Total = 12 credits

Is this schedule normal for a freshman in college?

No. Take another class to bump it to 16 credits. You can even survive 20 credits since that sculpture class takes 4 credits.

I took 17 credits first freshman semester, BIO, CHEM, CALC, ECON, ENG, and labs, and I was wondering if it would be too much. Turns out by your senior year, you'll look back and see that that scheldule is actually a piece of cake. By my junior year 2nd semester I was taking PhysioII, BiochemII, Anatomy, Microbio, and Physical Chem all together. (senior year was actually a lot easier becuase of major specific classes), something i never would have thought of doing my freshman year.

bio and chem are really only like 2 credits worth of actually effort instead of 8, so plug in 1 or 2 more classes.

15 hours a semester is average, as its what you'll need to graduate in 4 years anyways. DO NOT listen to people who tell you to sacrafice grades to fit in more credit hours per semester though. 12 credits per semester with a 3.8 is 10000x better than 20 credits per semester with a 2.8 . If you need to take suumer classes or 5 years to graduate, as long as it helps you get better grades, go for it. People talk about "full course load" but that makes up like 1% of what they're looking for in your entire application.

I cant believe they offer a 4 credit sculpture class!!! I have never seen that, then again I didnt take a single "art" course!

12 credits is ok if you've got 3 intense science courses. IMO, you'll find yourself with far too much free time as a freshman. Take another science course, maybe Developmental Bio or Anat/Phys or whatever else fills your pre-reqs.

In my school, you don't get on the deans list unless you have 15 units... that's why I always take at least 15.. 12 units seems like too little for me, I get lazy if I don't have enough units.. I did better when I took 18 units than when I took 16 and one of my worst quarters was from when I took 12 units

Same here. The busier I am, the harder I work, generally speaking.

Time consumed by labs wouldn't be too much of hassle would it?
What do you think about my schedule?

Same as the other poster said...if it were three hard science courses than that will be okay. I don't know how difficult the sculpture class will be so I can't really give a definite response. Do you have all your gen ed requirements completed?? If not, then try to get those classes out of the way.

your labs are fine.. well, the bio lab might be a little early but its good your labs don't go into the late evening. You also have lots of spaces with free time, thats nice.

i see what i think is history and english also on your schedule, but no sculpting - unless it's actually one of those. i would also recommend you take another class - maybe something easy like psych 101 or another gen ed requirement you can get out of the way if it's available on those days. while it may be nice to finish by 1 on mondays and wednesdays and pretty much have the whole day free on tuesdays and thursdays, i think that as a freshman you'll fall too much into the idea that college'll be a breeze and you won't have to do much. or maybe that was just me...

Are you recommending I take another science course that requires a lab or a gen. ed. in addition to my schedule of:

Biology (Cell Biology) w/ lab
Gen. Chemistry w/ lab
English 101
History Western Civ.

Do you think this course load is easy [studying 2-3 hours day], medium [studying 3-5], or hard?

Could you guys give me your list of courses and basic scheme of schedule from the first semester of your freshman year?

pretty sure that taking another science course is exactly the opposite of what i recommended.

really, all the rest of us on here are saying is just to bump up your credits to about 16. don't worry too much about it. after all, it's only your first semester. and what happened, no more scuplture? if you're taking those 4 classes and it comes to 16 credits, you're set.

It is traditional to finish a degree in 4 yrs. Not that everyone does this, but that is tradiational.. So, if you do the math and most schools require 128 semester credits to graduate, then it requires you to take 16 credits per semester (fall/spring) to graduate on time. Plus, 12 credits .... how do you think that compares to the 22 to 28 science credits per semester that we take in dental school? 12 credits really isn't enough especially when you only have 8 credits science.

i think 12 credits is fine for the first semester of your freshman year. I just finished freshman year and I took 13 credits first semester then 16 the second semester but I had 4 credits out of the way due to AP. I think that because of the transition from home to dorm, you need some time to adjust. I took Chemistry 1 and lab (4 cr and 1 cr), Intro to Nutrition (3 cr), Calculus 1 (5 cr). Most of the people I know just screwed up freshman year and I think its normal because of the changes and freedoms. However, I did really well (4.0) but it takes a lot of work, in my opinion, to do well first semester. Once you get that out of the way, the 2nd semester is so much easier because youre used to the work load and the 16 credits were a breeze. Plus, you can make up credits over the summer or over the next years, there is no rush. Im taking intro to sociology online for 4 cr right now while im doing some EC work. By the way, second semester I took a writing course (4 cr), Chemistry 2 and lab (3 cr and 1 cr), Calculus 2 (4 cr) and a social studies course (4 cr). Just keep in mind how different its going to be from home when you schedule your courses and you will wanna have a life too so...good luck. Make sure you don't give in to your friends and establish that you are there for education primarily and they will respect that.

Edit: P.S. I would keep your courses, the bio and chem that you take, you will need to master it before you go on. So sculpturing, although it is an elective, I think is good.

Bio/Chem/Hist/Engl is what you'll be doing now? That's 14 credits. Correct?

14 would be OK. You can enroll is 17 credits and if it feels too much the first week (by looking at that syllabus) you can adjust according.
