I had an interview at my state school recently and was asked where else I had applied. I replied vaguely, "all over the East Coast", and was then asked if this was my first interview. It wasn't, and I didn't want to lie, so I told my interviewer that it was not, and gave her the name of the other school I interviewed at when she asked. She then said, "Oh, that's a nice school," and I responded "yea, it's pretty nice". I want more than anything to go to my state school, and expressed this in my thank you e-mail to her...am I reading into this too much, or did I handle this all properly?

me 3. it's really hard to judge what the interviewer thinks, and as long as you have clarified that they are your top choice, it's good. just because you interviewed somewhere else doesn't mean you are accepted there, right?

I've been asked the same question at four interviews, and in one of them the interviewer straight asked me if I would choose their school over one of the other ones I had interviewed at. I was completely honest, and it has all worked out just fine. I think your answer was perfectly acceptable. What would have been bad is if you had said "no, it's not really that nice a school," or "actually, I didn't like it that much" or something like that.

I'm willing to bet that interviewers know when you're telling them what you think they want to hear or when you're trying to dodge a question, and I know for damn sure they can smell a lie a mile away. My opinion in such situations is to be forthright and honest, NEVER talk negatively about another school, and don't be afraid to say that you're not sure which school you would attend, but that x, y, and z really attract you to that particular school. In other words, try and use such questions as an oppotunity to talk about the many things that interest you in their school. Spin it around and use it to your advantage.

It is improper for schools to ask you things like this. I asked the admissions committee at my school about this situation before I interviewed with them. The director of admissions said that interviewers should NOT ask me where else I'm applying, and if I was asked, it would be fine not to answer. He said to report to him if interviewers were asking this type of stuff.

interviewers ask "improper" questions as a matter of course. I wouldn't make too much a fuss about such occurences, unless they asked you what kind of underwear you're wearing or somthing like that.
