Hi guys! I'm in NYC for the summer and volunteered to work with a program that teaches horse riding to people with disabilities. This would count as clinical experience right? I know that this is just short-term for just a few hours (I'll probably rack up about 50 hours?). I have other clinical experience, but I figured since I'm here and it's close to my home, why not just help.

Hard to say. I would lean towards no, but probably see what @Goro or @gonnif think

I'm no expert, but given that you're not providing any medical care or in a care setting I see no reason why this would be clinical...?

Like if I taught you to ride a horse would you say that would be a clinical experience? Obviously no - so are you saying that because people with a disability or significant personal challenge were involved it became clinical? Doesn't sound like a logical line of reasoning to me

I lean to yes, it's clinical, because clinical conditions have sent them to you.

Totally understand what you guys are saying... Thought it might count based on this excerpt from my school's health professions website:

"Here are a few common ways that students gain clinical experience:
  • Other opportunities that may help students build similar skills: working at summer camps with kids with disabilities, providing health education, working as a Certified Nursing Aide or Phlebotomist, providing language translation, working as a doula."

Don't call it clinical on your AMCAS application. If your pre-med office wants a list of clinical things you've done, fine but as @gonnif says, don't try to tell doctors that this was a clinical experience.

Do you say, "this patient is having a hard time staying on this horse."? No, you don't call them "patients" in the normal course of providing this service so it is not a clinical experience any more than serving them in a restaurant or babysitting for one of the younger ones would be a clinical experience. That said, having an experience of working with people with disabilities is a good experience to have and one that will add value to your application. Just don't call it "clinical".

What’s wrong by calling it a leadership position??

Do Adcomms play the horses??

Whoa there. The correct expression is "play the ponies". I suggest you stop this horsing around and get yourself back in the saddle on your application. If you need to be spurred on, I am sure you will people on here can help whip you into shape. On the other hand, if you keep shoveling this horsesh*t, you will indeed be a stable genius

You seem to be looking to stirrup some trouble .

It's a nightmare having to witness this foalplay. Try to rein it in, guys.

You just took that by the bit and ran with it, didn't you?
You're never going to win in this place, and you'll have nothing to show for it.

It is a pretty large hurdle - but I think we are just going round in circles now.
My apologies. Sometimes my unbridled passion gets the best of me.
