I was talking to this dude, who said he wrote stuff on his application about activities on "experience" that he never did, and they didn't check (or rather it was over seas so they can't check)... I was very interested because I never thought people would do stuff like that.

I've heard that lying on application can causes dismisal? he's already in the school and starting his program... And I'm just currious since I have no intention of going to pharmacy or medical school.

You should teach him the lesson of not bragging about illegal/unethical actions he has committed and send a friendly anonymous email to the school.

In all seriousness, such actions undermine the entire principle of the admission process and it is quite dispicable that he would take advantage of the limitations of the admission committee as to what they could verify or not. It's really up to you if you take any action, but again he really shouldn't be so cocky about the whole affair.

I'm just curious of how far you can lie on your application lol, it really made me think about the integrity of these students and actually a huge turn off for me in general. And if they actually tried to verified then it'll turn up. As it turned out he did not know that the volunteer program logged his hours (in fact I know they do, he just thinks that they don't), and the over seas activity i'm pretty sure they can get him too since he never did anything or has any proof, but that can be easily fake IMO if he wanted to cover his bases.

I have no intention of reporting him, it's his problem.

I have heard from a friend that there was a guy who lied about his pharmacy experience by asking his friend (who is not a pharmacist) to write him a letter of rec. He was unlucky that on the day of his interview, the interviewer actually called the pharmacy (he listed on his experience section). Big trouble, the pharmacist said there is no such person volunteer here. I'm pretty sure that guy got dismissed right away. 🙂

Your friend might be lucky this time, but he may not be as lucky if he keeps doing such actions.

All I have to say is: don't take shortcuts. To be successful, you need to put the effort in whatever you set your mind to do. They will pay off in the long run. 👍

not worth it.

If they ever discover his lies anytime during his schooling he can get kicked out. Not to mention the ethics that go behind it.

Win by running fast, not by tripping your opponent!!

If you think its lying than it is not a good idea. Why would you even chance it? And why would you post it on the internet that you even thought about it?

<interviewer> So you when to Africa? I bet that was amazing! Where exactly did you go?
.....
OHH reallly!! Thats where I was born and raised! Tell me what you like about .....?

<you> ummm the lion king?.. wait can I start over?

What?! I assume this is hyperbole. Dishonesty is a tremendous problem with every sort of application process. You couldn't have really thought that no one lies on their application? I absolutely do not condone this, but I will point out that between all of the prep tips you can get for essays/interviews...let's just say, IMO, the entire process rewards dishonesty. Honesty is praised in the abstract, but someone who is 100% honest in their essays/interviews will probably have a hard time will admissions. I seem to recall most school websites telling the applicant what they are looking for in a candidate so that you can tailor your app/interview answers accordingly.

Now what "your friend" did is a whole nother story. Lying directly about an activity that he did not do...unacceptable. And yes, your friend could most certainly be kicked out over this if it ever came to light, although at this point it seems unlikely.

I defintely think students embelish their experiences, but I couldn't imagine saying I used to live in Africa when I've never been. wtf. I found it easy to shadow at a hospital pharmacy that had a good volunteering department, but at retail it was because I knew someone. But having a friend pretend to be a pharmacist and write a fake letter, that's insane. And if you say you were employed as a tech and never worked for the company then come on, that's wack. I did 2 separate retail shadowing, but combined them on pharmcas under retail volunteering so I'm sure someone would assume it was just one Walgreens instead of 2 different ones, but that's different than making **** up.

you don't need to quote "your friend" to imply that it's me, if you have money to fly to my house, i can show you what I do and my education, I have no interest in the medical field what so ever (well at 1 point I was). It's the internet, all my profiles on the internet are fake, I can simply use public IP to post important things ect... I don't really have to hide anything on here.

And to be honest I always thought you're suppose to be honest on your application, maybe putting things in better light, but not telling people that I have a PHD, and when they ask me for it, all i can do is lower my pants...

OK. Lets just all agree that lying on your aplication isn't a good idea. Do many liars and cheaters get ahead in life? YUP. Do you want to risk your career on it. Id hope not.

If he thinks it's okay to lie on his application, chances are he will try to lie and cheat at some point during school and end up getting caught and thrown out. Such is life.

Lying on an application, even if it lands you in pharmacy school, doesn't help you out in the long run. Say you get accepted based on a falsified app...the adcom assumed you had actually experienced all you put on your app, and made their decision that you can handle the program based on that assumption. Lying is shooting yourself in the foot no matter what way you look at it.

(and when I say "you" I mean the general "you", not...well...YOU..lol)

Sorry, didn't mean to step on your toes. I thought it was well-known that when some asks about something "a friend" did they are referring to themselves. Sorry if I offended you, my humor is meant in a fun way, not a mean way. It is the Internet though...no need to be so touchy.

I would love to fly to your house and see what you do and your education, but I am kinda busy with school (not to mention poor). What did you end up going into if not medicine? Just curious. If it is good enough maybe I will fly out...

I don't even know what to say here. Yes you are supposed to be honest. But it is no surprise when you hear about people lying. People lie. The only surprise is that people think they can keep doing it and not be found out.

Nothing beats Adam Wheeler. He lied his way into Harvard making up where he graduated from highschool and letters of recomendations and everything. Lied his way through college and finally got caught trying to falsify his Rhodes and Fullbright scholarship applications. Got indicted for fraud http://www.thecrimson.harvard.edu/article/2010/5/17/wheeler-harvard-wheelers-applications/

Wow, not bad at all.

Who was that famous journalist who was caught making stuff up? He worked for the Times as I recall. Pretty interesting case as well.

:wtf: They seriously didn't verify the claims that he made? I mean, his story isn't the typical fluffing or whatever.

Btw, OT but, I just noticed your interview dates and hope your Midwestern ones went well! Lots of traveling in two days haha.

eh, i'm just super allergic to medical stuff, I was a very ill kid and going to the doc scares me ****less, I can't even look at needles. Stupid reason but I guess everyone has got some weird crap going on.

Plus i'm fairly intelligent, if it was me who's pulling that crap, I would lock it up and it's going to the grave with me, no chance of me going around bragging like that.

Are you referring to Jayson Blair from the Times? Or Stephen Glass from The New Republic?

Is that lying?

Is lying on your application considered lying? yes
