I just received an e-mail from the CIS department at my school informing me that I have received a warning for storing downloaded music on my computer (3 songs). They said that it will be fine if I remove all of the music, but they are going to: "This action will be logged (along with a letter that will be signed and placed into your file here at the college) and repeated violations will be referred for further disciplinary action"

Is this considered a violation that I have to report on the AMCAS? I am worried sick.

hmm not sure on that one. if it appears anywhere on your transcript, then i'd say yes. maybe talk to your pre-med committee and see what they say about it.

it seems to me for this type of violation, even if you check "yes" for institutional action no adcom's going to care that much. i think most college kids are guilty of downloading music. i wasn't aware that it could be tracked until now. 😱 just get rid of the music and move on. invest in itunes or buy your downloads from amazon.

Lol. I would write back and say "Oh no, not my permanent file!"

What's the action? Other than a note in your file, so that they know if you do it again, you really haven't been disciplined. I'd say that it is not an IA and if it were, the adcom wouldn't consider it a worrisome offense.

I've gotten net access shut off to my room so many, many times.... We didn't use any of those mean ol' RIAA-provided packet sniffers, though. Just caps on uploads. Any network activity can be traced to a MAC address, which is a unique number that identifies a particular modem/ethernet card/whatever. Bottom line: it can all be traced.

There's no record on your permanent file. It was a warning stating that if further action is taken you will have action taken against you. That's how I interpreted the first post but you might want to clarify with your school.

And how exactly do they have access to the contents of your hard drive? Sure if you downloaded the music on their network they could detect that, but how are they supposed to know that you still have the music stored? Or how would they know that you have songs on your hard drive that were downloaded elsewhere? If somehow they DO know, then something needs to go down. That's called, um, HACKING. Universities aren't allowed to hack your computer just because you're on their network.

You didn't read what I wrote.

fail
🙄

You don't even know what you are talking about ... if its downloaded, that takes precedence over the fact if you still have the music. That's a moot point. You download something, you get in trouble for it. Same thing goes for porn, hence why they hash and rehash into student for you to guard your logons. Read your terms of service agreement with your school and you'll see what I mean in reference to downloading ANYTHING from particular sites or even programs. Everything leaves a trace address unless you know what you are doing. Most students don't take the time (or have the know how) to be completely covert.

Wow it's 4am and you just managed to rile me up. Impressive! I make a comment, you read it improperly and say i'm wrong, I call you on it, and you AGAIN don't bother to read what i actually wrote and try to claim *I* don't know what i'm talking about?

The OP said he was told he had to DELETE the ALREADY DOWNLOADED MUSIC from his computer. I questioned how they would know if he'd done so or not without peeking at his HD. You DO know how the intertubes work, right? The songs aren't streamed everytime he clicks them, all network activity related to those songs is in the past unless he's actively uploading them, which i did not address.

I THEN stated CLEARLY that if he downloaded music on their network they could detect that. Trust me, I know what friggin IP addresses are. I'm not over 30. ;-)

I THEN stated that there was no way for them to know if he had music on there that he downloaded from somewhere else unless they hacked his HD. Are you telling me I'm wrong? Do I not know what I'm talking about there either?

The OP stated he was warned for STORING downloaded material, not for ACTUALLY DOWNLOADING it. Yeah, I know that that's what really went down, but what I was responding to was the idea that the school would be able to confirm the presence of these files if they were left on his computer without doing something patently illegal themselves.

I'll assume since you don't have a status ticker that you're already well along in your career, and thus don't have to worry too much about reading comprehension or an MCAT VR score anymore. Lucky you.

Oh, don't let me forget the cherry that goes on top of smugness.... 🙄

Wow, you do get riled up easily. 😉 My point wasn't the deletion of the downloaded music, I was addressing his question of disciplinary action. We're on the same coin, just different sides. They need to tell him to "delete" the music for the obvious reasons, not necessarily Big Brother issues of watching over your shoulder to just make sure you get rid of it. Standard claim of liability for the university. They don't see what you have on your hard drive unless you have saved it to a "shared" drive on the university system. In that case, they do have the right to go into that space.

Sorry, people misrepresenting me, or dismissing me based on their own misperception is a pet peeve of mine. If it's any consolation my RL blood pressure wasn't exactly elevated by the situation. ;-)

But I stand by my point that it's pretty rude to claim that *I* don't know what I'm talking about just because *you* don't know what I'm talking about. I responded to rudeness with rudeness and sarcasm, which is juvenile but hey these are the internets and that's where I get my juvenile kicks 🙂 Still anonymous internet-acquaintance friendsies? 🙂

I think we can claim a truce on this one. 🙂 Also my pain meds and not sleeping in a day or so is making me a bit cranky so of course things can come out a little more harsher than expected.

No!

Fight! He wronged you! Strike him down with all of your hatred.

This is SDN, not Candyland!

ignore the bickering going on here, i have the best answer:

i downloaded a movie at school a year or two ago and got a similar email. it was a warning for downloading copyrighted content. it is not IA. it is not a big deal as long as you don't get caught again. you may now proceed with your life.

****fits are funny

I got caught stealing candy from campus vending machines. Each vending machine has a card reader. I would swipe my card then unplug the phone line so that I could still get what I want but the charge couldn't be sent. I didn't factor in that everytime I did this, a "Pending Charge" message would appear on my campus credit statement. When whomever was in charge of monitoring these accounts saw 1000's of "pending charge" messages, they knew something was up.

They didn't really do anything to me, just made me pay for stolen snacks. Still got into medical school.

Pain meds should mellow you out! You aren't taking enough, obviously. Quadruple your dose and call me in the morning.

I was going to call a truce, but Cegar says I can't. Sorry.

mshheaddoc, you, my hated enemy, are a DOODOOHEAD.

OH Snap, YOU'VE been SERVED

wow limewire and kazaa are so not the best way to do it......

i don't think so. they didn't actually take any action against you, just emailed you.

besides, i know i'm of "the new generation," but if i saw that on a student's file, i'd laugh and ask them about it in an interview.
