I am starting med school next semester and since i am a slow reader i've been searching ebay for books and methods that would help people read faster. In this search i found a bunch of CDs that are supposed to improve people's reading skills simply by listening to the sublimal messages recorded at a wavlength our ears can't hear but our mind can enterprate. they claim that this is based on the SLP science and some kind of hypnosis methods. Is this even real, ,does it work, have anyone heard/tried any of these methods and what do you think about them. Inputs are appreciated

I have never heard of this and I am skeptical of hypnosis, but books on tape my help you with this problem.

Sounds as shady as shady can be. I would just read more.

PS: It's spelled "interpret".

This is not a pre-allo subject, moving to Sociopolitical.

If your ear can't hear, then your brain can't either. Or do you mean too low for our brain to consciously pay attention?

If you believe it hard enough maybe you will get a slight benefit from the placebo effect.

No its not....its spelled inntereprettedtted. There is a special kind of purgatory reserved for people that correct spelling on online forums.

Yah,, you see why i am looking for these kinds of things in the first place. i am not that good at reading/spelling (6 in verbal)

Second, the way they describe it is that the CD is supposed to be playing some kind of relaxing sounds ( like ocean and nature) and the message is in a frequency that can't be heard by the ears which doesn't make that much sense but i thought that someone could have heard of it before or something.

I totally know what you're talking about being a slow reader... i am too... what I've found to really help me though is reading more... I've been finding stuff I like and just reading up more on it, or just going to the used bookstore and finding random novels to buy and read.

I think this is your best bet. You could also try some academic books (i.e. cancer cell biology or cell bio or organic chemistry or whatever floats your boat) and see how fast you can skim-read before you loose the essentials.

With a bit of time and training you can speed things up.

I kinda doubt that this quick reading will pay off as a med student. You read a lot because you study a lot because there is a lot to know. Getting the quick overview is what you did in undergrad. You can't skim read for detail. You can improve your reading speed to some degree... but in general, if it sounds too good to be true, it is.

If u go online check out eyeQ I used this program for ACT reading and increased over 10 points... i would contribute 5 of those points to that program

I'm skeptical of all the propaganda I see on TV. This is no different than that extenze, the diets, and miracle work outs they advertise on TV.

Are you sure that it wasn't a placebo effect. You'd be amazed by how much you can improve your skills by simply reading and writing.

Yea some of it is placebo that is why i said 5 out of the 10 points lol. But it truly does make you read faster as long as u practice. If you dont keep doing their stuff you starts to read slow again, but hey all i needed was to read faster on ACT 🙂

btw it is free if u know where to look so x.x
