Do any of you dorm at a undergrad or know any one who does, who is older (like 26). I am contemplating dorming, as living at home is not working out very well for me. I do live in brooklyn NYC thou so it seems a little silly to leave with all the good schools especially Hunter.

I am currently doing a post bacc at hunter college. I am taking classes as a non degree, since my gpa is horrible and I can't get officially into the program. Don't know if I could get into another school.
I am hoping to be in a more postive enviornment where I can study with others. I just dont want to be the 26 year old weird guy in a dorm with a 18 year old.

I don't think anyone will care. Live where you want. You might find yourself being all "get off my lawn!" at the younguns though. I'm only 23 but I live next door to a student rental full of undergrads, and I'm always pulling beer cans out of my garage downspouts and muttering about kids these days.

Many schools have dorms that are open only to senior level undergraduates and graduate students. I'd check and see if this is an option at your location.

we have one that lives in the dorm next to me. He's a lot older though, like early 30s I think, and LOOKS older. It's usually no big deal, but sometimes he shows up at parties and just kind of hangs around in the corner looking like a creeper staring at undergrad girls... I don't think this would be a problem in your case because you're at least close enough in age that you wouldn't stick out too much. Just don't be the creepy old guy at freshman parties...

i had a lot of older students at my college living in the dorms, 44 was the oldest. you should be fine, and enjoy yourself. you may even get a job out of it as RA or something like it.

When I was a junior in college I was placed in a dorm with all freshman, and when they found out I was 21, I suddenly became the most popular person on the floor, they won't think it's odd at all.

thanks, besides the students thinking its odd, do you guys think its odd in general. I'm wondering how it will sound to family members and other people.

Also then the second part of the question is do any decent premed programs at SUNY schools not have a GPA requirment? thanks.

Right. That's the case here at SFSU where I'm doing post-bacc work at 23 going on 24.

No one I know cares about the fact that I'm in a dorm. It's essentially a townhouse here, anyway. The only issue is that you don't want to be stuck with a roommate, I'm sure. At 23/24, I'm now a lot more patient than I was when I was a freshman, but having to accommodate someone in your own room will drive anyone nuts.

Try to get put into adult student or upperclassman housing. That way you probably won't have to share a bedroom (and pretend to be asleep while two drunk 18 year olds are having sex 5 feet away from you), it'll be quieter because they have to study, and they won't all bug you to buy alcohol for them (since you'll get in more trouble for buying alcohol for minors than they will for attempting to buy as minors).

I'd only recommend it if it saves a lot of money or commuting time. Even in suite-style housing (shared a bathroom with 3 girls and had my own bedroom) the dorm life kind of drove me nuts but it wasn't that bad. Little things bothered me, like RAs having some authority over me (like being able to stop me from going upstairs during a tornado warning or leaving me notes after dorm checks that my room is too messy). Not having a kitchen bothered me a lot, especially since our cafeteria food sucks. It was really quiet, quieter than some apartments I've lived in, probably because it was all girls and no freshmen. The easy access to social life was nice, there's usually a party somewhere on campus if you want one. I knew from the start that dorm life wasn't for me though -- I've been ready to live on my own since elementary school and I refused to go to college anywhere that didn't have good off-campus housing or single rooms for freshmen. If I can live in college housing and be reasonably happy with it, anyone can.

I don't think it would be weird ... I think it would be annoying. I'm barely a few years out of that jackass, 18 year old, freshman stage, and I seriously - already- don't think I'd want to live with 500 18 year old kids. Agree with the 'get off my damn lawn you hooligans' comments.
