Is this possible. Apply to DO schools with current mcat in the spring --BUT -- take the mcat in the spring and send that only to the allopathic schools. Or when I apply to DO schools, don't put I will be taking the mcat again. Then take the mcat in april or august for the Allopathic schools. Currently, my mcat is average for DO schools for not for allopathic schools. I do not wish to risk getting a lower score and lose my chances at DO schools as well. thank you.

not a hundred percent sure about this but i think when you release your MCAT scores to schools you will be releasing all of them. So the only way that i can see you not having to report your new MCAT score to the DO schools would be to take the August MCAT and have all the DO information into the school before August, but they still might get the report i don't know. My suggestion is to not worry about it im sure that you will do better or just as good this time.

you can pick and choose which scores you release to aacomas. i have done this. BUT they will see the date of every mcat you took, regardless of if you released that score.
with amcas, you have to release every single score. the only way you can pick is with non-amcas schools.
but if you get a lower score this time (i hope not!) i dont think that will damage your chances at DO school that much, since you scored higher in a previous exam. and the majority of schools will look at your highest score of each section from all the exams you took.
i dont know if lying on your aacomas about re-taking the mcat is a good idea tho.

what do you mean I can pick and choose? So I can forward my scores from april of 2003 and not 2004 if I do worse in 2004? How is that possible? Don't we send all the scores to the AACOM service? How did you do it? Thanks.

you have to release your scores to aacomas, it is not automatic like it is with amcas. when you take the mcat, every score you have is released to all allopathic schools that use AMCAS.
so after you receive your score, you have to go to the mcat website and send a score report (its online, and free now) to any school that does not use amcas, which includes some allopathic schools (columbia and nyu come to mind) and the osteopathic service, aacomas.
in that score report, you can elect to "hide" mcat scores from certain exam dates. but the score report will include ALL the dates you took the mcat. so basically, if you hide a score, the school will know that b/c they can see you took it on that date. but that is your choice.
i elected to hide my very first mcat, which i took blindly when i was young and stupid 🙂 but they still saw the date of it. if i am not being clear, maybe you should go read about the score reports, i think its called the thx system, on the mcat website.

I don't think you can pick and choose. When you click on the box on the MCAT web page it asks you to click either DO or MD schools or both, but it doesn't give you a choice of picking only a certain year.

amy - you can send selected scores to certain schools. aacomas is one of them.
when you log into the mcat thx system, and say you want to send a score report, there are 2 options - send ALL scores, and send SELECTED scores.
certain schools will not allow you to send "selected" scores, there is a list you can check, but aacomas will accept this.

Interesting, so have any of the schools asked you about the hidden score? I mean if someone chooses to hide scores will the schools question that hiding? Just curious about this.

well being that i havent been on an interview yet, im gonna say no... i'll let you know what happens though.

Oopps, my bad.

for some reason I thought you already had an interview.

I do wish I had known this before, I would have hid my first MCAT score which stunk. I know, water under the bridge now, but I do wish I had know about the hiding score option.

Good luck with your interview Chrisobean

Is this still possible to do -- specify which scores you want to send to aacom? thanks

I always just relaed everyhting. I had a 22 the first time I took the MCAT and I took it over again. If I was an Adcom I would be wary about people hiding or not releasing scores to the school. Makes me wonder if they would hide things from their patients.

Now, I am not an adcom or associated with one. That is jsut my opinion on things. Again, your situation may warrent that and thats cool. I am jsut saying what I would be thinking of if I saw an applicant with scores withheld.

Ok, but did your mcat go up the second time you took it? If you scored lower the second time you took it...would it release only your first and higher score? thanks.

Personally, I sat on my 22 for about 3 years. I went back to school last Feburary leaving a very cool job with the Walt Disney Company to pursue my dream of medicine. I decided that a 22 was crap and that I needed to buckle down. I studied for 4 months straight along with my classes. I didn't watch tv, I put my playstation in a box, I locked up my DVD collection until that magical date in april happened.

Yes, My score went up in fact it went up a lot but I was disappointed I didn't get a 30 or above. I really thought I did well on it and I knew my stuff. Its also why I don't bust on people for not having a 30 MCAT and still wanting to be a doctor. Its an ass hard test.

I don't know how the release options work cause I never checked it out. I am a VERY open and honest person sometimes to the point of being very blunt. I figure this...this is who I am and I don't hide it. You like me...fine accept me. You don't...please don't waste my time and reject me.

So, if I took the MCAT and did worse what would have I done? Well, I better have a decent reason why I sucked that bad. Study habits? Girl problems? (like I had the night before my first MCAT) Poor prep? Bad time managment? Allergic to the MCAT? Dog ate my MCAT study material. You get the point.

Yeah, I'd think about witholding the score for sure if I did worse. I would still be up front and honest that I took it. I would have also taken (which I believe you did) the spring MCAT again. Since those scores arn't released I am sure you would have done better on this one. I just try and think of what the adcoms look at when they start screening. They have a lot of applications to go through so they usually frown upon "odd" things like withheld scores. Then again you can have a 4.0 in nuclear biophysics engineering and saved 40,000 african children with money you raised by lobbying washington so....the whole package is the total picture.

If you have several scores, they aren't going to look down upon you if you have a lower score. They will only use the highest score given, regardless of the order it was taken to compute your candidate status. The fact that you are trying to hide your scores is stupid, and will be questioned at your interview.

You arent necessarily hiding anything. On the MCAT i sent scores to AMCAS only. Then when i decided to go D.O. as well I logged into the MCAT THX system and realized oh wow i can pick and choose which set of scores I want to send. So it is defintely possible. I wouldnt consider it hiding your score if they ask you to choose. Oh and also i sent all my scores just cause I was new to the whole thx thing and didnt want to take any chances. In short, yes its definitely possible and its definitely not hiding anything in my opinion. If asked then tell the truth about it plain and simple! 😀

Hey Robz,
Are you going to Nova this fall? I just noticed you mentioning your job with Disney. I'll be there in August as well.
Just wondering

HI there.

Yes I am. I am actually getting ready to go down and apartment hunt on the 21st in Ft. Lauderdale. I'm excited.

Yup, I also worked for disney for about 3 years straight and had a lot of cool jobs there. It was an absolute blast but medicine was my true calling.

That's cool,
I just saw your email to the m2008 list serve. I'm pretty excited about getting strated myself. I'll be down there between the 20th and 23rd this month to look for a house or townhome. Good luck apartment hunting! I can't get in most of the places because I have a German Shepherd. 👎

Yeah I figured I was lurking there too much. I figured I'd write a little ditty.

Sorry to hear that about your pet. I know my old apartment building had a big deposit for pets. Plus my roomates at the time had pet which they tried to hide from the apartent complex. They had rabbits and gueina pigs....go fig.

When I moved out the apartment complex found out and oops they had to pay.
