Is this possible?!

You haven't discovered some magic time saving way of getting into medical school. Imagine if you never got in... what would you do with 3/4 of a degree?

Medical schools list under their requirements that they need certain pre-requisite courses to be completed so that they know that a candidate is ready for medical school.

Do we even need a bachelor's degree? Is it possible to technically finish all pre-reqs within two years and apply to med school after second year of UG without completing any degree? It would be kind of like a 6 year accelerated program I guess...has this ever been done before and if so, what are the pros/cons, chances of something like this actually happening?

Couldn't I just come back and finish it if I didn't get in?

This is possible. You don't need a Bachelor's to apply to medical school. I had a classmate who applied and got in after 2 years of college, though I have no idea how feasible it actually is to do. I'd imagine that you would have to be a stellar candidate otherwise and that you need to be able to demonstrate your maturity.

It's possible, but not very likely.

IIRC, greater than 99% of accepted students have a bachelors. It's not a requirement per se.... more of a mandatory suggestion.

As others have said it is possible but quite rare. Any student I've met that's gotten in without finishing undergrad has had phenomenal stats and been very mature for his/her age.

You should do the FlexMed program then. You get to apply as 2nd year

My school required the pre-med classes as well as a bachelors degree. I'd imagine thats how a lot of programs are set up.

I don't understand why anyone would take pre-req courses, suggested courses, and credit requirements without just finishing with a degree. What a waste of money.

Since you need 90 credits usually and 120 to graduate (meaning 1 year), most people just finish their degree during their application season. It is theoretically possible and it used to be more common (my father for example), but now adays the vast majority of applicants just finish their degree to the point where one can assume that it is preferred by schools even where they do technically have that credit but not degree requirement. Less years/credits means less time to prepare your application in most cases so that is another ding to your application right there. Regardless of your relative competitiveness to other applicants, you would be less competitive than yourself a year later.

It is a de facto requirement, but not a de jure requirement, to have a bachelors degree. Also, many schools state that at least 90 college credits must be completed as a minimum for consideration....at least I think I saw this a number of times in the fine print of medical schools' admissions homepages.

Hmm...but even if I did apply now (starting May 1st) and if by some miracle, was accepted, that would still mean that I would be starting med school NEXT August right?

Did your classmate go straight into med school in August of second year? Or did he/she apply after second year and matriculate third year?

Assuming the school agreed that it was ok for you not to finish your degree. The bottom line is by going that route you are knocking out a ton of great medical schools from your application pool.

There are some schools, Hopkins for example, that require a bachelors before matriculation, so if you got into one of those schools your acceptance would be contingent upon you finishing your degree.

yes.

And the first day for submitting apps is June 3rd IIRC.

May 1 is when AMCAS opens for the 2014-2015 application year and you can start filling it out, but that doesn't mean you can submit on May 1. First day to submit is June 3. Those applying this summer are applying for the med school entering class of 2015, matriculating in August/Fall 2015.
