I have a 3.95 GPA, but i got a 26 (11BS, 9PS, 6VR Q)

now, i am considering retaking but my premed advisor tells me that I can't get into even a D.O school because they will prescreen the 6 or that is just too low for them.. i am jersey resident and was hoping to get into UMDNJ-SOM with these scores.. i havent applied this cycle.. i want to do a year of service, but i was wondering if this is really true - that D.O schools wont take a 6?

A lot of DO schools really don't post where they screen out. It looks like you are mainly interested in UMDNJ's DO program. Know that their averages are high and number of slots are low. I'd personally just apply right now and retake the MCAT in Jan. You can do better than a 6.

I would not apply right now.....take the extra yr and retake the MCAT (twice if needed)...

Your GPA is excellent and you probably would have a shot at MD with a 28-29 and great ECs.....

I do think you probably could get a DO school or two to let you in right now.....🙂

yeah, i am def thinking of retaking it but do you guys know of people that get into D.O schools with a 6 on one of their sections? please let me know :/

There are people who have been accepted to both allopathic and osteopathic med schools with a 6 in verbal. If you do a search on the boards and an MD Apps search, you'll find this to be true. However, a 6 in verbal significantly decreases your chances. If I were in your shoes, I'd retake the MCAT to increase my chances/options when applying.

Confused so a 6 in verbal with a 3.9+ GPA leaves Osteopathic med doubtful?

DO student here, plenty of people with a 6 in VR at DO schools. My concern at this point wouldn't be whether a 6 is good enough, but rather if it's too late to secure a spot at this time. Apply anyway and see.

I think you should apply now. UMDNJ-SOM explicitly states that GPA matters more than MCAT. You slipped up in one section. Big deal.

If the overall total was still 30+, I would say get it a try....not with a 26 though. Might get in! But, I would apply when I felt I had the best app I could get. I would not half-ass a try!!

I got a 6 in verbal and was accepted DO. I withdrew my app from UMDNJ-SOM before I heard back from them though.

I got a 6 in VR my second time around w/the mcat. Although my frist VR score was an 8, so I am not sure if that was taken into account. I have so far been accepted into three DO programs, one of them being my top choice (CCOM). I definitely know it is do-able...but I also applied early and had lots to put on my app. Don't let that 6 hold you back, but realize that it is kind of late to start applying now.

I applied this year with a 6 in verbal (26 overall) and have received 2 DO acceptances, and 3 more interviews yet to come (2 MD and 1 more DO). It's doable, just make sure the rest of your app is strong.

i guess the overall answer to your question is: NO. DO schools will still take students with a 6VR.

but it sounds like you don't feel very confident in your application. if that's true, i would take the year off (not bad for you since you already stated you want to do a year of service) and think about taking the MCAT again, then reapply. overall, a 26 MCAT is a little weak, and i'm almost positive you can increase your score. with a higher score, you can apply with a lot more confidence and unless you really bomb your interviews, you'll definitely get into school
