Is your area saturated?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
 Maybe I am exaggerating a bit...but come on now...can anyone on here really bare to live in a rural country redneck area? I know I can't...I am a New York City girl. I like living in big cities and I like to enjoy myself. I don't want to go outside my house and only see trees and cows...sorry...

I know you agree with me on this one...I don't see how anyone can live in the woods.

I do prefer to live in the city, although I grew up in a rural area. I guess I could go back to the rural area if I had to, but I've gotten used to being able to get good Thai food, having restaurants open all night, having all the new movies playing in the same 20 screen theater complex and my choices of places to shop. I don't even want to live in the suburbs. I like the city.

I'd rather live in a small town where I can trust everyone and ask anyone for help. In big cities, I'd see too many people who couldn't care less about a stranger having some car problems.

Maybe it's b/c we're in the South, but people in my city are pretty nice and helpful. I don't want to move back to my hometown b/c it's so small that everyone is always in everyone else's business!

There are some smaller cities (but still nice) outside of Atlanta that people can easily commute to (Duluth, Lawerenceville, Stone Mountain, Lilburn,Johns Creek, Alpharetta, Sneville,Tucker, etc.) but those are getting pretty saturated too...Atlanta/surrounding smaller (but still nice) cities are all getting saturated.

All other cities outside of that area are really small and rural...some people like ME would rather die then live in those cities.

I know a lot of people that graduated and moved to Alablama or South Carolina. SUCKS! 🙁

If ALL ELSE FAILS I guess I can move to a really crappy rural city...get my loans pay off ASAP in 2-3 years and then move back home and find a totally different job. That's the worst case scenrio. :/
I know where you're coming from. Personally, I would have to be unemployed before I'd move away from southern Louisiana.

You'd quit being a pharmacist just because you want to live in a different city?

Yeah, if I didn't have any loans and could find a job that pays 50K to 70K a year that's in the city that I love I will drop pharmacy in a heartbeat!

Worst scenrio...me move to a really rural place...I will work as a pharmacist pay off all my loans and save up a little bit of money. Will take maybe 2-3 years to pay off my loans and 2-3 years to save up money (maybe less since in the rural area there is nothing but cows...so it's not like I have anywhere to spend my money!). After I save up for 2-3 years I will quit pharmacy and move to a city that I love and find a job there. Any job will do. 50K a year is good enough. That's the WORST case scenrio though...I really hope I can land a pharmacy job in a liveable city. PLEASE!

Just found out today that retail chain store in my area plans to begin laying off pharmacists through March.😱

I'm going to need a nanny/personal shopper/pool attendant/dog walker type in a few years. Want to apply? I could probably come up with 50K! 😀

Do you know how to cook or clean?

Me too! See we think the same! 😀 Family owns a few Thai restaurants...if it was in a rural area NO ONE would even know what Thai is! I LOVE shopping too! We could hangout! 😀

Yes, no Thai food in most small towns. In my hometown there is only the "Asian Buffet" but I don't like buffets. OK now I'm craving Pad Thai but my favorite place isn't open on Sunday. 😡

I am a neat freak...so I def clean very well...cooking, however not very well. 🙁

But I'll take you up on that offer if I can't land any pharmacy jobs at a decent city.

I do NOT mind moving but I have to be moving to a NICE CITY!!! I do not mind moving to New York City, San Fransciso, Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Monica, Santa Barbara, Hawaii, etc. You get the picture. I do not mind moving but I don't want to live in the woods or with the cows. That's the problem. Pharmacy please don't make me live with the cows!!!!

I can cook. I just hate going to the grocery and cleaning up afterward. Maybe we could work something out... 😀

If Kroger or one of the small retails decides to get out of the pharmacy business, there will be a flood of pharmacists.

I think Kroger has seen good profits on their front end items as a result of pharmacy traffic, but on the reverse end, they are loosing money on a lot of their scripts.

If memory serves me correct, I think Kroger has pulled similar moves before in other parts of the country.

YAY!!!!!!!!!! 😀 (I do not know why so many people hate doing the dishes...I don't mind it I think it is easy...it's outdoor (yard work) that sucks!)

I hate yard work! My husband does it, but if he wanted to stop I would just hire a sexy young guy to do it shirtless and I would watch. I never do outside work, can't stand it!

OMG, we are more alike than I thought! I would do the same! I have never mow the lawn in my entire life.

How much does this job pay, and is there any pool cleaning involved?

My mother used to pay me to mow the lawn when I was a teenager, but I'd quit halfway through and tell her to forget the money. I hate hate hate that stuff. If I wasn't married I'd live in a condominium so I didn't have to do outside maintenance. I hate the feeling of dirt on my hands. It gives me the creeps.

Yeah, my mom use to pay me and my sister to wash the dishes, vaccum the floor, and do the laundry..indoor work...which was all fine with me. I don't mind cleaning...a dirty house makes me uncomfortable. But outdoor work we always pay someone every two weeks to come mow our lawn! No one wanted to do that job!

I'll most likely live in an apartment until I get married so my husband can do all the outdoor work!!!

In all seriousness though. R you worried about the job market at all? do you think you can land a job? I am not sure anymore...especially after reading all this stuff online!

And I haven't even enrolled in gigolo school yet! Maybe you can write me an LOR too...

I recommend becoming a stripper...gigolo is too much!

I've lived and worked in cities across southern Louisiana. I could live in any of those cities; I enjoyed being there. The culture and festivity is pretty similar. Some cities are nicer than others, but all and all, they're pretty similar... except that Mardi Gras in Baton Rouge is terrible. 🙁

I guess I see things differently. A nice city, to me, has little to no suburban sprawl and a significant cultural atmosphere.

A little. Not hugely worried. I think I've got enough work history and contacts in the profession that I will find something. I'm also applying for a few local residencies, so we'll see. I may not get THE job I want right away. I may not work full time.

My husband has a good job and we have very low monthly expenses. We also have a new baby coming so if I don't find something right away, I'll just stay home for a while. Maybe I'll get pregnant again

Right now I feel more hopeful about life and the future than I have since before our daughter was killed. That may be another reason I don't get too much into the "doom and gloom" threads. I now have a strong sense about what is actually important in life and it's not money or work. At least not for me anyway.

You don't even need a degree to be my cabana boy! Just keep the pool clean, learn to make good drinks and put in your time at the gym.

As long as my lawn boy/pool boy/cabana boy looks good shirtless or in a Speedo, I'm good. I don't need to see what's underneath.

Strip clubs actually scare me. We went to one last year for a coworker's birthday and all the girls looked skanky and underage. I am not usually germ phobic or whatever but I did not want to touch anything in that club!

What if someone created a website devoted to the pharmacist saturation issue urging the academic world to take notice and be proactive rather than reactive to the situation? Maybe we could post articles i.e. journal articles written about the issues, NY Times article about law schools etc. describing the issue asking administrators to do something about it? And maybe even listing the name and email address of every Dean's college of pharmacy asking that students and alumni email them about the problem to raise awareness. I know, sounds kinda corny, but could it work?

That's good to hear. R you wanting hospital or retail? If you got a residency and job offer which one will you take? I do need to work on networking myself...I don't have much job experience...😱

Just staying home always sounds like a GREAT plan to me! 😀 R you almost graduating or doing your rotations right now? It will be hard to have a baby while you have to study for a million things in school. If it wasn't I would want a baby too! hehe....

I can NOT imagine what you have gone through with your daugther. That is just so sad. 🙁

You are right...not working as a pharmacist really isn't the end of the world. I'll be kind of annoyed about taking out all these loans and not having a job. But overall, I will not be very upset about not becoming a pharmacist.

After I finish my current rotation (ICU) I have two more (five weeks each) and will be done at the end of April. Having the baby in May and then graduation in June.

I am open to the type of pharmacy setting I work in, although chain retail would not be my top choice. If I can get a residency I will do that because I think the benefit will be greater long term.

Losing Riley has definitely given me a better sense of what my priorities are. That's for sure.

I endorse both bolded statements. 👍

I think one of our informed SDN regulars should write an article for SDN on this topic 🙂

It would need to be evidence based and well researched and appropriately sourced. Or, clearly marked as an opinion piece. But we don't really do front page editorials, in general.

LOL at the direction of this thread went....

Anyway, I'm from Houston and I've lived in Austin and Dallas for a few years, so I enjoy bigger cities as well. However, I'm in a small town in East Texas right now. It really isn't bad at all. I work 10 days straight of 8 hour shifts and get a 4 day weekend every other week. Sometimes I pick up extra shifts, but recently they have dried up even in freakin East Texas. The pay is a lot better here and you can have a 5 day vacation every other weekend. I came here not knowing a single person, but I just absolutely love it....even when I'm one of the only Asian people in this town. All you guys from Lou, Seattle, and ATL should come down to Texas...where you pay $0 in state taxes haha.

I wonder if someone at SDN could contact a professor or someone that has already done a published article on the topic to write an editorial on the same topic to be posted on SDN front page? But seriously, I think we need to list every dean's email on a website and have their mailboxes flooded to raise awareness on the saturation in order to bring things back into perspective. I think someone (an article in a pharmacy journal) made a call for a re-evaluation of the manpower study. But, even with current conditions, I could see 4 big things make things change rapidly...

1. Improving economy
2. Baby boomers aging
3. Healthcare reform
4. Mandatory 1 year general practice residency

Thoughts?

Mandatory residencies are still a way off. There aren't anywhere near enough spots. If you want to work retail you should not be forced to do a residency.

Can you elaborate on how a one year mandatory general practice residency would improve the situation?

There would be 1 year where there would be no new graduates. This is a way off and tends to still be debated.

or earn a pharmd for that matter (IMO).

It's been debated a lot on SDN. My thought is that we're years away from having the capacity to even THINK about mandatory residencies. Without adequate numbers of spots, we'd just get more people with massive debt who are unable to become licensed pharmacists. Then we would see people defaulting on loans en masse.

Not to mention that it would require amending the laws of 50 states + territories. In another thread someone mentioned that the chains would just call the first year of working for them "residency" and work people like slaves for half the money.

I agree with items 1 through 3 on your list but I can't get behind the idea of mandatory residencies.

Atlanta, GA is completely saturated. There was only ONE job position available for the class of 2010. I hate to see what the prospects are like for the class of 2011 and beyond.

This is completely false. Walgreens alone hired 7 interns for the Atlanta area market that I personally know (so probably about 20 in all, being as the Atlanta area is split into two districts). One of which has not passed their boards yet and the company is holding a spot for, and one of which got a negative recommendation from her interning RXM and still got the position. And these aren't for traveling to Valdosta. They're floating positions, but they're full time in Atlanta-to-15 minutes outside of the perimeter.

Edit: Which is not to say that there's a shortage here, but mainly just a tick towards the employers. At this point, anybody who's proven their worth to a company is not in danger of being unemployed after graduation, but 3-4 years down the road could be a problem if the market continues it's current pace.

I've got friends in NYC that want to get into retail, but can't unless they are willing to go to Harlem or the Bronx to work. At this point they are sticky it out where they're at and kinda miserable.

BTW, this is all classic signs and symptoms of a saturated market where you see everyone "stuck in their jobs" and unable to move. The treatment options?????

I am from NYC (Brooklyn). If Harlem and the Bronx are hiring, I am more than willing to go! I used to work in the Bronx and went to school in Harlem....if anything I thought it would be damn near impossible to find jobs there due to recent housing developments and NYC being ULTRA-saturated.....what gives???????????

I'll do it. I will entitle the article:

"Drugs will lead you down a path of disappointment, unemployment, and, ultimately, disaster: a few thoughts on the coming epidemic of misery for pharmacists in the United States; or, How I learned to stop worrying about my future financial ruin by getting high on Xanax."
