So who else from SDN will be attending IUSD this coming July? Also what are you guys doing about housing, because I might need to find a roommate! So if you plan on attending IUSD this coming July, post a little about yourself 🙂.

*raises hand* we are few in number here on SDN 🙂 good job on finally picking IUSD! 😀 you'll be saving money, and i'll be forking it over by the truckloads 😛

i'm gonna fly to Indy the first week in May to find a place. i have like 5 places narrowed down. i plan to live alone the first year. if i find a gal i can trust our first year, i'll consider a roomate for the remaining years.

being from FL, i'm gonna be scared sh*itless come winter. i have no clue how to live with snow! :scared:

i'm so excited and nervous all at the same time. July is just around the corner.

do we have to buy the laptop from IUSD?

a little about myself:

i'm a 4'10" hispanic vegetarian.
i have a longterm boyfriend.
i'm taking my cat with me to Indy.
attend U of F.
drive an 05 Jetta.
i make hemp jewlery.
love to cook.
etc. etc. etc.

Heya IWuvTeef!

Wow you are way ahead of me 🙂. I haven't even begun looking for places. I am actually thinking about purchasing a condo, but I need to get in touch with a realtor so I can see some options. I don't want to be too far away from the campus, preferably 5-10 minutes driving. I hope there are others on SDN heading to IUSD. Here is a little info about myself; I am basically your opposite, haha, atleast when it comes to height and cooking!

Myself:
I am a 6'2" Romanian Omnivore
Long-term gf (who is a vegetarian)
Attend Wabash College (All male institute 😉)
Drive a 02 WRX
I am too lazy to cook!
Enjoy clubbing, hanging out, reading good sci-fi books! (Dan Simmons, Neal Stephenson, etc.)

 very true opposite! love the term omnivore 😛

buying a condo is a very good idea. i did the same thing for undergrade. i bought my condo for 50K, and four years later, it's worth 120K!!!

i was paranoid about not finding a place to live, so it's one of the first things i started to look into once i got accepted. next mission: buying the scrubs :meanie:

Oh and ya...we are required to buy laptops. I believe you can purchase them from anyone though, and then you can ship them to IUSD to have them load the required software on them. Here is the IUSD page for our class which contains the information concerning the mandatory laptops. They have a link to purchase laptops through Dell, which seems to be a pretty good deal.

http://www.iusd.iupui.edu/depts/edu/sa/new_students/default.htm

We aren't required to wear scrubs to class are we? I was under the impression we could dress any way we liked.

wow thanks for the link, i would have never found that. IUSD's website is a little hard to navigate at times...

for attire, i think it's scrubs or nice dress clothes? not sure, but i know i'm gonna love wearing scrubs all day. it's like wearing PJs to school ;P

does anyone have any "do's and don'ts" about living in a state where it snows during the winter?

i've never had to cope with snow. :scared:

The biggest thing in snow is to drive like you've got a brain between your ears. Other than that, it's really nothing to be afraid of. I'll make sure to get you with a snowball or two next winter if I see you outside the school. 😉

Also, the school's computer department claims that buying their laptop lets them do a better job repairing your computer if something goes wrong. One staff member's idea of "repair" is "overwrite the entire hard drive, so tough luck if there was something on there you wanted saved." It's no big deal as long as you backed your stuff up beforehand, but I've seen a few people lose a lot of data because they *didn't* know. I've also heard reliable reports that this individual in particular has no scruples about leafing through pictures, etc. on your hard drive just to see what's there.

There *are* some good people in the department, and you'll figure out who they are (and make friends with them if you're smart). I don't want to name the idiot publicly, but PM me and I'll let you know who he is. Most people in my class bought the Dells, but I got mine from Gateway and don't let the IT department touch it unless I'm right there watching what they're doing.

I am debating whether to buy a nice 17" screen laptop with all the bells and whistles or a ultra portable laptop with like a 12" screen. What do you suggest Bill?

Personally, I'd consider going for something between those two extremes. The ultra-tiny laptops are cramped & difficult for a lot of people to work with, and something as big as a 17" can be a little unwieldy in a lecture hall seat trying to take notes.

Bottom line, there's nothing inherently wrong with either of the computer types you're looking at. For what it's worth, I think mine's a 15" and I like it just fine. Just make sure, whatever you buy, you give it a test-drive in the store and convince yourself it'll work in the classroom environment before you drop the money.

Bill:

are we allow to install the software ourself?? or do we need the IT department to do it. i know a lot about computers so i was wondering can they just give us the sofware and we can load it?

I am not sure. I imagine it did not help that I sent my application in september. I think if I would have taken the DAT earlier and sent my app to AADSAS in may I would have maybe gotten an interview. It doesn't really matter though. I feel very fortunate that I got as many interviews as I did. My stats are pretty average, so I am very happy with the results 🙂. To answer your question though, maybe Tufts had higher standards this year, I am not sure?

No, you can install all the software yourself. The only thing they're absolutely required for is to authenticate your computer when you add it to the school network domain. If you know how to maintain your computer yourself, that's definitely what I recommend.

damn July is almost around the corner.

wow!
hard to believe that i will no longer be treated as the little freshman at IUSD anymore. LOL

No, but instead you'll be the second-year that everyone sympathizes with, but not too much since nobody really enjoys remembering second year. 😉

In all seriousness, Ahmad, despite all the flak I give you about second year sucking, you'll make it through just fine. Let me know if I can do anything to make it a little easier, even if it's just answering some questions about what to expect.

And also, to all the incoming D1's--I might be a TA for your anatomy course, so I'm looking forward to meeting you. We need to come up with some sort of get-together at the start of the school year.

Man...Anatomy has me scared already 🙁 . We should definitely meet up though when school starts, that would be awesome. So how did you get to become a TA for anatomy, did you do really well in it? So Ahmad, how was your first year? Tougher than you expected?

lunguv said:

i could go on and on about how 1st year has been going for me so far. to give you a feeling for it, i think that my 1st semester was pretty tough for someone just getting in. we had somewhere around 34 units. i had a pretty tough time dealing with anatomy simply because we always had a ton of stuff to memorize. considering the fact that we were really new, i thought that the work load for one semester was a lot.
now as for the second semester, we really dont have much. normally 1-2 classes a day. lecture in the morning then single tooth indirect lab in the afternoons. i am really enjoying my second semester here mainly because we have more hands on work than having to sit in lectures for hours and hours like the 1st semester.

overall, i think that school has been pretty good. yes it was a little more tougher than i thought, but like most people say, its really not as bad as some make it to be, it all depends on how well you adjust to the change.

thank you sir. i'll be sure to take your offer. you have always been good to me and so i appreciate it.

Hi everyone! I will also be attending IUSD as a member of the class of 2009. I look forward to meeting you all! 😀

Cool! Glad to see there is another SDN'er going to IUSD. Are you from Indiana?

Hi rwilli!

Hey Bill or Ahmad:

Do you know what the attire is for the orientation (casual or nice)?

anyone know of a good area to buy a house? i prefer a brand new house and would like to stay near campus as possible. i was looking at Fall Creek Place, any one has any comments about this area, or recommend some good areas?

the orientation attire will be business casual. basically, just look nice.

i think that you will get a lot of info sent to you pretty soon. it will tell you what you need for IUSD.

Hi! I am from Northwest Indiana - Valparaiso to be specific. I currently attend Valparaiso University and will graduate in May with a music major (piano performance).

No... ****. I am also from Valparaiso 😉. Where did you go to higschool? I went to valpo high...graduated in 2001.

Hey guys,

I usually just browse the topics rather than post, but I had to add myself to the list of "Regioners" who will be entering in July. I actually went to Portage for high school, but had a Valpo mailing address (portage phone & school, valpo mail, chesterton across the street, weird). Anyway, I look forward to meeting you all down there in a few months. I think I'll be posting a lot more once classes start.

Hey Ryan, it's good to see that there will be a fellow musician in the class. I doubt we'll have much free time, but we should try to get together sometime to jam down there. I play guitar, bass, piano, and sing, and like just about any music genre.

By the way, do we need to buy the laptop before classes start, or can we wait until the loan money comes.

Mike Flores

Hey guys,
Just wanted to let you know I dropped the DDS in the name because it sounded too much like I'm already a dentist. Figured I'd make the switch now before I get too many posts up. It was a hard thing to let go, and I'm not gonna say I didn't cry, but it had to be done. I'm gonna miss her.

Good for you!! And...Yeh Yeh VALPO!!! 🙂 haha.

hey people

i got a "letter" from the housing ppl at IU. it was a stamped envelope from them that came empty... did you guys get this letter? what was the jist? i'm gonna call or e-mail them, but i just wanted to know in advance. thanks!

welcome Mr. Miyagi 😛

hahaha, thats funny, i got the same exact letter. i called and asked why it was empty, the secretary told me its only important if you want to live on campus. what i did found out is that this year they will require us to buy their laptops, which which sucks because i don't like the dells that they wanted us to buy.

I received that too, except my envelope wasn't empty. It just had a brochure in it about on-campus housing options, which I think are way too expensive. So has anyone actually received an information packet (finaid, housing, schedules, computer, etc.) in the mail yet?

thanks for the info! as of yet, i have received zilch!

hey demonicr: that sucks about the comps...

i don't think they sent anything regarding what you have listed yet. she did told me she just sent out information about vaccination and health insurance, so we should be getting that soon.

I received a packet today that included immunization sheets, financial aid info, and a handout from a prof containing material we need to know before classes start. Also, we're supposed to start collecting extracted teeth from dentists/oral surgeons.

haha

no you wont. at least not in your 1st semester. you'll get to have a lot of fun in anatomy lab, then molecular cell bio.

get those vaccinations out of the way. they are pretty costly around here.,

got my papers today finally. now we just need info on the comp and orientation.

the OneStart program is making me mad. the only way i can start an account is if i have a student ID number. no one ever told me my number. supposedly it's on the admission letter, but it's not on mine. do i have to call admissions to get this number?

For the ID number, I just used the last 4 digits of my social security number and it worked. However, it was so slow at processing (>10 mins) that I got tired of waiting and closed the program before I knew what my username will be. So now when I try to go through the process again, it says I already have a username and password but I have no clue what it is. I guess I'll have to make a phone call now -- what a hassle!

 that sucks. yea, IU needs to improve on getting us the correct info for all this stuff.

i'll try my social and see what happens.

Update: well that didn't work. apparently i'm not in the system. maybe it helps if you're already enrolled at an IU campus as an undergrad. that's probably why the SSN# works for some of you. i guess i'll call on Mon to see what i can do... 😕

I ended up trying the last 4 digits of my soc # too, and it worked fine. I tried to set up my account the day that I got my package, but their servers were bogged down. When I tried again the next day, I had no trouble. When you do get through though, be prepared to make an insanely secure password. I couldn't use any of my usual passwords because you have to have at least two non-alphanumeric symbols in it.

lunguv said:

Thats really strange because I applied in October (I added it after I applied) and still haven't heard anything at all. Did you even interview or you got a flat out rejection. BTW my stats are similar to yours except my DAT is a little lower.

I tried logging in as a new user, entered in my last name, bday, and the last 4 digits of SS# but it said I was unauthorized to use Onestart. I just was admitted about 3 weeks ago...but I already sent in my deposit and got all the info....I wonder why its not working. Its too bad IU doesnt use insite anymore...as a former student at IU Bloomington, it would have been much easier to log on seeing that I still have an account (can use it for requesting transcipts). Guess I too will be calling to find out the info about onestart. One thing I remember from being at IU is that the system isnt always available (I think it was limited on weekends) and they always had random repairs. Its too bad my old passwords wont work for onestart. I just got the immunization papers, financial aid papers and the notes on dental anatomy the other day....in the letter it mentioned that we will get info on the laptop very soon (as well as orientation). How long does orientation last, is it Wednesday-Friday July 6th-8th?

Judging from last year's calander , I'm guessing 2 days. I wonder if it's an all day thing. It's going to be crazy walking around with 99 other strangers. 😀

What's the format for your username? Like, is it your first name initial and then complete last name? I know my password, I just don't know my username.

The computer username system at IUSD is totally messed up, because the school is a component of the entire IUPUI campus (~30,000 students). Thanks to that, your username & email will be SOME combination of your first & last names, but not necessarily first-initial-last-name.

Example: Student Andrew Jackson's e-mail address might be ajackson, anjackso, andjacks, andrjack...you get the idea. It's not very intuitive, but it's a necessary evil with so many students running around the same campus. Hope this helps some.

Hey Guys,

I'll be joining you all there in Indy come July. I've been an avid member of SDN since the beginning...but I really haven't posted. I thought I'd start here.

Anyways, I have a question for you all. When you all went onto the Onestart program to check on your financial aid status...was there any information available for you?

B/C when I went on there it basically didn't give me anything...I'm debating whether to call them...but I thought I'd try here first.

*And guys, lets keep this forum alive! 🙂
