Hey Guys,

I'll be joining you all there in Indy come July. I've been an avid member of SDN since the beginning...but I really haven't posted. I thought I'd start here.

Anyways, I have a question for you all. When you all went onto the Onestart program to check on your financial aid status...was there any information available for you?

B/C when I went on there it basically didn't give me anything...I'm debating whether to call them...but I thought I'd try here first.

*And guys, lets keep this forum alive! 🙂

Cool right on dude. I cant even log onto my account...gotta call IU!

OK...

So about that packet of info everyone got in the mail....have any of you started to collect your teeth?

Where....how?!?

Ugh...im so stressed... 😕

don't worry, we only have to collect 8 teeth. but i'm gonna get as many as i can b/c i think we will need more down the road.

I'm prob gonna start collecting teeth next week. I'll buy some of those cheap Ziplock microwave containers and prepare the bleach solution. Then I'm gonna hit up like 5 dental offices. I'm sure dentists get students hounding them for teeth all the time. Leave your containers at the offices until school starts and you should have plenty.

Remember, use the puppy dog eyes!

the orientation will be a two day event and i am sure that it will be an entertaining part of your whole dental school period.(at least the 1st two hrs of it.lol). normally they have the whole two days planned out and it will be pretty busy. you get to hear a million profs. welcoming you and telling you that you have picked the right profession.

after that, you get to hear about school policies and the HIPAA which are always very entertaining. just make sure you have had plenty coffee to stay awake.

as for the username/password, you really dont have to worry about it right now. i cant remember how i set up mine but i know that it was not an easy task.lol. Welcome to IUPUI.

as for collecting teeth, go ahead and collect them if you can. if you cant, dont worry about it. you wont need them till your second semester.

see you guys soon.

Every school asks you to start collecting teeth. We will need them when we start to do restorations/crown preps in pre-clinical lab (ie lab where we work on inanimate objects..ie a typodont). Apparently (as Ahmad aka perfect has told us) we will probably do waxups and learn the anatomy of teeth and the mouth first semester (thats my guess) and second semester we learn how to do dental work on an object that doesnt move (with the collected teeth). FYI, after talking to my dad he recommended I go to my uncle (oral surgeon) and ask for teeth because most general dentists extract teeth that we wont be able to work on (because they have had work done to them). Ask a dentist first, but also ask oral surgeons (for many reasons...primary reason being that they pull a lot of teeth everyday) for teeth. Lunguv, where are you from by the way??? I am from Chicago but went to IUB so I know Indiana fairly well (through visiting friends hometowns and driving on I-65). Anyway, its all good...just get your teeth before class starts or at very latest before second semester. Orientation sounds like a blast!!!

Hey,

Thanks for the info. I'm looking forward to meeting you all as well. As for the teeth collecting...I'll get to it once I graduate in May. I still don't know what's up with the whole financial aid thing....i have absolutely no information under my name when I look up my file. <---kinda scares me...

Other then that, I'm looking forward to what my destiny has in store for me up there in Indy. See you all soon... 😉

 Hmmm.....I think I will try to start a black market operations selling extracted teeth to IUSD students who don't have any to use. 😉 *evil laugh*

I am from Valparaiso...so up in the northwest of Indiana...about 45 minutes from chitown. Ya...orientation does not sound like a blast to me...maybe I’m just being pessimistic...who knows. I think I am still mad about all the papers I have to write in the last 2 weeks of my semester 🙁. Ya...I am sort of excited about dental school, but sort of not, simply because I know for the first 2 years I will again be stuck in the library most days...same ole BS, different day 😉. Hehe, but...what I am excited about is meeting all my new classmates, hopefully we will have a cool class without too many jerks.

Not so much the library as the lab. First year you can spend a fair amount of time doing your own thing outside school and still make solid grades. Second year, that's more difficult to pull off simply because of the increased volume of lab work you'll be working on, plus the usual complement of lecture classes you still have to study. Either way, it's stressful at times, but in the end things will turn out just fine. 👍

So, I recieved my papers about the computer and other stuff today in the mail.

One with my student ID number, one about the mandatory Dell laptops, and the other about our white coat ceremony.

I'm wondering why we can only have 2 guests at our white coat ceremony...you'd think it would be a bigger deal then just having 2 guests...I dunno...

Anyways, it made me excited again...just the thought of moving up there and starting a new life sounds good to me...even if it does mean a butt-load of studying...

did anyone else get the letter?

They're not trying to exclude you or anything. It's mostly just a matter of facility space. If I remember, the auditorium where you have the ceremony isn't very big.

Stupid predent question of the day: Is that ceremony mandatory?

If it's of any comfort to you, lunguv, I'm not a jerk 🙂. Floridians are pretty chill; the sun has baked our brains. 😛

Haha...yeahh...boy you won't be getting much sun after september! Get ready to be pale most of the year!!
By the way, when are you moving down to indy? A bunch of us SDN'erz should meet up before school starts!

Just tell the cats you're taking them to Disney World....that way they won't be upset until they get to Indy and don't see Mickey.

Have you already found a place? Do you mind me asking where you plan on staying? 😀 <----I'm not trying to be too personal, I'm just trying to find a nice place to live.

So...how old is everyone?

I just turned 21 2 months ago...

I'm 21, but I turn 22 next month. Have you checked out the housing information posted online? http://www.iusd.iupui.edu/depts/edu/sa/new_students/default.htm. On the IUSD Apartment Guide, a lot of the links to the apartment websites are bad, but they can be easily found by doing a google search on the name.

I'm most likely going to live with my older sister, who lives like a 5-minute drive from campus. It would be nice to live on my own, but it's hard to beat living with her for practically free 🙂 .

I'll be in Indy May 4-7 to look for a place. I have a list of about 5 places. The only ones I can think of off the top of my head are Wildwood Village and Seabring Court.

This was useful as was this site.

I'm 22.

What do you guys plan on wearing to school? Scrubs or suitable clothing? I wish they would send us info about the proper attire. Do most DS1's wear scrubs? I don't want to be the only one. 😛

I'm pretty sure only DS3's and 4's wear scrubs (someone correct me if I'm wrong). The day I interviewed, I got there way too early and sat around in the library to wait, and almost every student in there was just wearing normal clothes. As for what I plan to wear, I'll likely just wear the same sorts of clothes I wore to college but maybe a little nicer.

Congrats on your Med school acceptance.

Thanks! I'm so excited!!!!!!!! I'm going to really have to decide for sure in the next few days dent vs. med. I'm strongly leaning towards med right now, but that's probably just because I got my acceptance letter today, since yesterday I was heavily leaning towards dent!

Thanks, IWuvTeef, that was helpful. I'm still not sure if I'm going to settle with an apartment or look for an affordable house. Prices are really great in Indy.

About what to wear. Although scrubs would be the obvious most comfortable attire, I think I'll be wearing "suitable clothing" as you put it (except for those days we have lab) <---for which we are, im assuming, required to wear scrubs. I think the whole scrubs thing is for DS3 and DS4 students that are mainly working in labs during the day.

I guess we'll just have to wait a couple of more years till we can really allow laziness to take over our closets... 😛 (oooh...can't wait...just the thought makes me smile 😀 )

Congrats Pianoboe01! Take your time in deciding. Make sure you consider every aspect and good luck in whatever you choose! 👍

where did you guys get that 10 digit student ID number from to creat the login?

I spend waaaay too much time here...it's my 10 minute break from studying...sad, i know... 🙁

Anyways, I got my ID number in the mail with a whole bunch of other papers.

But before I got that, I just used the last 4 digits of my SS#.

i didn't get my ID# in the big packet. in the space where the number should have been it said, "we will e-mail you your number when we get you into the system."

as for the attire, i was looking forward to wearing scrubs 🙁. i was lead to believe every d student wears scrubs. both FL schools wear scrubs all 4 yrs so i thought it was the norm... oh well. i guess "suitable clothing" flatters my body better anyway. 😛

Nah, plenty of people wear scrubs during the first two years. It's mostly a matter of personal preference. Myself, I wore scrubs all the time at first, but the novelty wore off after a while. Now I wear ordinary street clothes most of the time, scrubs when I'm planning to do some messy lab work, and scrubs or professional dress for when I'm upstairs in clinic. Your mileage might be the same, or it might be totally different. 😀

Hey...I received the same thing....i.e. "we will email you with your information." Maybe it has to do with the fact that we were just recently admitted to the school and seeing that the other posters were probably admitted around 12/1...IUSD has had 4 months to put those people in the system. When I called to find out my ID (after trying to register unsucessfully with the last 4 digits of my SS#) they said the person/people who put students into the system at IUPUI were on vacation or were out and when they got back they would let me know my ID #, etc.

Any good places to buy elastic-waist scrub pants??? I have scrub pants but they are the kind you tie and they are too big, but if I get the next size smaller, they are too short. I have had a lot of problems finding suitable scrubs to wear (worked in dad's office for ~1 year).

Curious about the white coat ceremony...are the coats inscribed (or even different) or are they just typical white lab coats?

I've been told www.allheart.com is a good place for scrubs. I think the IUSD students wear "ciel blue". Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

dont feel too bad. i had to drive about 2000. LA------------->Indy. long way from home. besides, you'd be excitted about the trip and b4 you know it, you are here. hope you like humidity.lol i thought i was gonna die from indy's humididty.

yeah we do have chill people. really really chill people.
for a while i wondered if some of the peeps here had even heard of a bar or a club. its actually getting better though. i think that its just my class. most of the upper classmen go out and have a good time. my class? well, lets just say that the picnic sponsored by the school was the only even we all attended.

the distance is not what troubles me, it's my 2 kitties. 😛 i suppose the vet will have to give them some sleepy pills.

as for humidity, i was looking forward to finally getting away from FL's humidity. indy's got it too? 🙁 poopy...

Bye, bye my fellow IUSD SDNers! I'm 99% sure I'm going to IU Med this fall. I guess this is good news for someone on the in-state waitlist at IUSD. I wish you all the best of luck next year, and maybe I'll see some of you around if I get the Indianapolis campus for Med. (For the first 2 years, only 1/2 of the med students are in Indianapolis, the other 1/2 are divided up between 8 centers spread throughout the state. Everyone goes to Indy for the last 2 years though).

Pianoboe, hate to see you not go into dentistry, but good luck in med school.

Does anyone know when we'll find out how much we are awarded for financial aid. I tried looking on OneStart, but it doesn't show anything yet. I'm assuming it will be updated within the next few weeks, but I'd like to make sure I know how much I'll be receiving before looking for a place to live. I'll probably call the school to find out, but I figured I'd check here first. Also, do you know when we'll be awarded our funds? I'd like to use the loan money for the deposit and first month's rent. Thanks.

i think we should be receiving the financial aid stuff anytime soon. i read somewhere that we should be getting that info sometime in april. from what i read on the financial aid packet, our loans will be dispersed to the school, and the school will issue us a refund once the tution balance is paid off. so probably you might not get your refund check in time, depending when you want to move in. have you decided where you want to live yet?

That's pretty much what I was thinking. I think you'll get your funds more quickly if you set up a direct deposit, but I still don't know if that will be soon enough for a deposit on an apartment. As far as location, I would like to be as close to campus as possible, but would also like to keep the expense relatively low. My parents are looking for some fourplexes near campus to buy, but if they can't find anything I'll probably get an apartment.

I am beyond excited to come to IU this July and meet you all! By the way, thank you Aphistis and Perfect3435 for your input on my thread IU vs NY.

Hope to hear more from you all!!!!

I have to say I feel bad for those of you moving from warm weather climates to Indy...coming from Chicago and having done my undergrad in Bloomington, IN the winter weather wont be much of a concern to me!!! Indy is funny, when it snows 3" its a "national emergency" and they shut down roads...I imagine its much worse in southern states, but seeing that Indy is only 250 miles away from Chicago its worlds apart in terms of winter preparation (I realize it has to do with lack of investment into a substantial amount of snow removal trucks)...in any case just as a point of reference I can remember going to high school when there was over 1 foot of snow on the ground...I think school would be cancelled for a week if that happened in Indy. One thing that sucks about the winter weather in Indianapolis that we dont have is the freezing rain (black ice)...I am sure many of us will bite the big one one on unseen patches of ice in the upcoming years.

Lunguv...ever see Ferris Buellers Day Off or Breakfast Club? My high school is in both of those movies....John Hughes went there and makes every attempt that he can (or at least could in the 80s) to bash it.

I look forward to seeing you all at orientation....however...I am unsure what is going to happen with the situation on the waitlist at one of my state schools (#3 as of now...they say 10 people come off each year). If it werent for the price tag and location I would tell them that I was going to go to IUSD...but seeing that its 1/2 the price per year in tuition and its here in Chicago...its hard to turn down if I get the chance.

I am really into sports...and cant go to sleep without watching ESPN. Oh yeah and go Bulls! Reggie Who???

bullfan...

I hate to say that I hope you get in at your state school!!! Way better on the pocketbook...and I'm still #1 on IUSD alternate list!! Just waiting for that one spot to open up! Either way, good luck to you!

being #1 on the alternate list right now, you should feel pretty confident that you are going to get accepted. im sure at least one more student will withdraw their acceptance there. just keep your finger crossed.
