It is with great pleasure that we announce that the recruitment for the Jefferson Urology Research Scholar Program is now open for applications for the academic year 2019-2020. We are looking for potential and enthusiastic candidates who are interested in being part of our research team.
This position is funded and open to all medical students interested in urology. It is ideal for students who are looking to take a gap year during medical school (usually between 3rdand 4thyears but open to all medical students). This is an opportunity for those who seek to bolster their application for the urology match, and will improve and enhance general knowledge within the field of medicine and research.
Here is a brief description of the experience:
Medical Student Focused Research Year
We focus on 1-2 papers/projects that the student could “own” and write-up (with guidance from a primary mentor that is specific to the topic of the manuscript - endourology, cancer, voiding dysfunction, simulation, etc), and then have the student involved in a wide portfolio of projects that are ongoing to gain an exposure to all different components of research in the department.
Based on recent experience, here are some of the opportunities that are included:
a. Helping with review articles or book chapters with faculty. Almost every year some of our senior faculty may be editor of a book and employ the student to write some of the chapters
b. Learning and conducting medical abstraction/database curation from the EMR for our ongoing robotic prostatectomy and MRI/fusion databases.
c. Assisting with simulation-based projects utilizing our VR robotic surgery simulators in the OR and in the Hamilton simulation center.
d. Collaborating with other departments (eg radiology) in projects that involve urology and that particular specialty.
e. Working on active clinical studies/trials focused on cancer and survivorship or neurourology
f. Scholars will be given the opportunity to present their research at regional, national, and international meetings.
On the non-research side, the student would be welcome to attend resident didactics and grand rounds, and could shadow some of the surgeons in any subspecialty while here.
