I'm a 24 year old college grad. I have a BS in psychology. I've been working as an EMT for the past two years, but now my back is starting to hurt. I need out of it but don't know what other options I have. I can still be under my mom health insurance so I no longer need a full time job. Any suggestions? Anything in healthcare or a lab?

Oh, and I live in NY.

Well your status says pre-med so I'm assuming that you're looking for job ideas while you're in transition to medical school.

If that's the case, then yes, healthcare and lab jobs are good options. It can be hard to get a food in the door in healthcare with your credentials. I don't know if being an EMT qualifies you officially to do anything other than be an EMT, and I know that a lot of private practices and most hospitals require certification in order to work as a medical assistant. But if you think you can get hired as an MA, I think that would be good experience prior to med school. Other than that, I'm not sure what jobs you can get with significant patient access within the medical context (i.e., not in the billing/insurance side).

Lab jobs are good, but you'll have to fight for them. Did you take many lab classes (especially biology) in college? If you have research experience as an undergrad then that will help you get a post-undergrad research job at a university. Both are good for medical school applications.

Good luck!
