Hello!

I used to work a medical job(nontraditional student) about 5 years ago. It is important for my application and I talked about it in my personal statement quite heavily. A couple years ago the company quite literily cleared house and rehired all new staff. There is not 1 person in management still there from my time working.

They will not respond to me to verify the hours for 4 years of work. But I have all my pay stubs to back it up. I'm paranoid about how to put a contact for this job.

Two questions
1) should I use an old supervisor who does NOT currently work there as a contact for this job? She would vouch for me

2) What would happen if a school called and they did not have the correct record of me in there system? Would the school contact me to explain?

Thanks

Another option: Call the payroll office and see if they have your records. They'd be fine to use as a Contact. You don't need a reference, just a verification of timeframe and hours.

That is a good option. By payroll office do you mean the company on the pay stub that actually sends me my paycheck?

@Goro @Catalystik Another question for you both if you don't mind.. I am in a predicament with a volunteer activity lasting two years. I volunteered bringing disabled children horseback riding into the wilderness. This took quite a bit of training, set up/take down for each trip, and driving a couple of hours to and from the start point for each trip. The organization that I volunteered for officially recorded about 38 hours of actual volunteer hours (time on the horse). Each trip is 2 hours, so 18 trips total over two years, but for 2 hours the set up/take down is another 2 hours and another 2-3 hours for driving(I don't drive with the participants, so I get this isn't volunteering) essentially lasting a full day.

I am putting this as a Most Meaningful experience, but when I write 19 hours/year it seems so small. Should I put the official "on the horse" time as the total, and then explain the effort involved in each volunteer hour, or my total and then explain that only 38 hours were "on the horse"? How would you go about best representing the hours? Whatever I do I don't want them to call expecting a 100 hours and hear 38, obviously.

It was truly one of my most meaningful experiences volunteering to see these kids normally in wheelchairs feel free in nature for the first time, and I'd say that those 38 hours were more effort/ more rewarding than >200 hours I spent doing the more generic volunteering!

Really appreciate any help!

Include the horse time (38 hours) + Setup time (38? more) = 76 Total Hours in the header. Travel time is not included in volunteer activities. Explain the breakdown in the narrative section and you might even go into detail about the training, though I wouldn't include that in the header totals (more to reassure readers you were qualified in some way). You might allude to the driving distance to get to the wilderness, but without totaling it up.

Really appreciate the response. By header do you mean: Experience Name box or top of the Experience Description? And should the official "Total hours" box be 38?

Thanks a bunch

Header is everything above the experience description box.

Official Total Hours is horsetime+setup time. Your description of horsetime will match what your contact will confirm. You will explain the related setup time per event.
