Hi everyone,

I was curious if any one know the job market in Washington state like around Seattle area. Doesn’t have to be proper Seattle but anything around that. Thanks a lot.

Arguably the most beautiful part of the country.. Would be quite interested in knowing more as well.

I would like to know too. I would maybe Instagram message Paul Tran, he is a pharmacist in Washington State.
Also, what have you heard about job market in Arizona?

You mean job market in eastern Washington? What market is there for new grads out of state west of the Cascades

I have no true knowledge of the job market for pharmacists in the Seattle area.

With that being said - the job market in and around Seattle is absolutely dismal. Good luck finding a decent job there..

I don’t know job market in AZ right now but I heard my friends aren’t able to land a job so it must be bad. I am going back and will try my luck and see what happens.

It’s the same as any place. Saturated. The license is also very expensive. Renewal is $265 every year. Prob better off getting licensed in ID or OR

Lol I have all 3 of those licenses. The WA one is definitely the most expensive by far and was the most annoying to get. Suicide prevention training that you have to pay for yourself, BS. I think I'm going to let it lapse my next renewal, I've never actually practiced in that state and have a fairly secure job now after some bouncing around.

But sure, OP, get an OR or ID license. Unfortunately there aren't many jobs in those states either. Veryyyyy competitive.

I’m relocating to IL sometime next year for personal reasons. WA is my original license but I don’t wanna renew it after I get my IL license. Is that possible? I also have OR and I’ll be keeping that one. So much cheaper. I heard WA is changing to every 2 years renewal but no idea if that also means a price hike

Is your OR a primary license as well? Or did you reciprocate your WA license to OR? It may be state specific, but I was under the impression you always have to keep your original license if you use it to reciprocate, or you have to take the Naplex again for primary licensure. Definitely double check that with IL BOP. It would suck to be tied to that WA license forever.

Thanks guys, I guess I will pass on that state. Lol

I don't know your situation, so I can't really give any specific employment advice. I briefly browsed thru your post history and can't tell you if have CA or AZ licensure. But if it's solely a license you are after, I would actually recommend pursuing Idaho licensure solely because they no longer require the MPJE. You could easily get licensed and then use it to reciprocate to other states in the future. Their annual fees are fairly reasonable comparatively. Anyway, it's not a bad idea while you figure out the job stuff. Hit up national recruiters or job staffing agencies and tell them you will move anywhere if given reasonable enough time to pass an MPJE.

The MPJE is an expensive joke.100 dollars for a test that should be taken like any CE course at home.It is simply a scam for the useless NABP to raise revenue.

Every licensing exam is $100 or more. Not sure what people whine about. You would have paid the same thing or higher even if you had chosen something different.

I was looking into that state as it was one of place I could move. But now I am only focusing on AZ at the moment. I am trying to get licensed there by next month and will start applying. i am willing to go anywhere in AZ at this point. I just need job ASAP.

I see there's still a listing for a staff pharmacist at Walmart in Parker, AZ (pop ~3k)

It's almost 40 miles from Lake Havasu City and 51 miles to Blythe, CA.

Blythe is about 3.5 hrs from San Diego driving. About 2.5 hours from LHC to Vegas.

Damn Nice, will definitely looking into those. Was always interested in Walmart

I reciprocated my WA license to OR. I should research this cause I really don’t wanna have to keep paying $265/year when I move to IL

I wouldn't call that nice but OK.
Lol i meant to say it’s good there is some job and I know it’s probably crappy Area. But I can’t be picky right now. Also I just heard that one of my friend got call for same spot.

I looked up that Parker store and it seems the pharmacists are just part-time per diem types

That market covers Las Vegas too (the AZ stores are BHC, Fort Mohave, Lake Havasu City, Parker)

I wonder why they are part timers or per diem.

The Washington State Dept of Health does not require the original pharmacist license to remain active once you obtain licensure by reciprocity

I actually just went through the process of reciprocating my license to WA. My original state of licensure was VA, which I had let lapse because I didn't have any desire to move back after I moved away. It had only been 3 months since my license had lapsed so I was able to just pay a late fee to get it reactivated, but I would encourage everyone to just keep an active license in your original state of licensure, regardless of cost and inconvenience. You never really know where life will take you or what your next job will require. I don't even work in WA, but had to get dual licensed for my job.

What a senseless regulation,A shakedown from your friendly BOP

Seattle is nearly as expensive as San Francisco. A pharmacist can't afford a home there.

Nope.. Nothing is as expensive as SF. Perhaps not even Manhattan.

Seattle IS damn expensive though..

I agree that housing in Seattle is quite expensive, but the surrounding cities that are only about 15-20 minutes outside the city are actually pretty affordable (I have family and friends that live in the area). Washington also doesn’t have state income tax!

It's easier to flee to Canada when you're in a state that adjoins the border.

Something to consider in 30-50 years (i.e., you will all be dead by then so it's a choice your spawn will make)

Yes whoever wants to live in the actual city of Seattle will def be paying a lot for housing. I live 30 min south of Seattle. I barely go to the city now. Pre-covid I would only go to catch concerts, shows, and games. But I would never want to live there. No state income tax is what I’ll miss when I move away!
