I'm graduating this December, and I've been applying to part-time jobs for next semester so I can get some more clinical hours while I'm waiting for interviews and studying for a MCAT retake. I've gotten two job offers so far and I have one interview on Monday.

1. Private practice- endocrinologist

pros: would work with only one doctor, 9-5 three days a week, 15 minute commute

cons: not a lot of variety in procedures/patients, not as hands on, might be called in on off days

2. Medical scribe at urgent care (CityMD)

pros: would see more patients, more hands on with patients, very intensive training

cons: work with multiple doctors, 12 hour shifts w/weekends, bad reviews of CityMD online, 45 minute commute

3. Medical scribe at hospital- interview on Monday

pros: work in hospital

cons: work with multiple doctors??, dont have much info yet

CityMD wants me to give them a answer by Monday, so I'm trying to decide by tomorrow. I'm torn between possibly getting more patient experiences and being exposed to a wider variety of cases, versus being able to build a stronger relationship with one doctor and possibly getting a better LOR. Thanks for the advice!

Wait so did you already apply and you're just wondering about getting more clinical hours?

Regardless, any of these are fine if your goal is just building hours. If I was in your shoes I'd take that endocrinologist job just cause it sounds maybe a little more cushy. You don't *NEED* to see a lot of variety in this job, that's what med school is for

Yeah, I applied this cycle but I haven't gotten any IIs so far, so I'm preparing to reapply. I just don't know if I should focus on getting more patient experiences or getting a better LOR.

Post a WAMC. More patient experience doesn't hurt necessarily but that may not be the root of your problems.

If you're re-taking the MCAT, I would assume you feel like this is likely holding you back. If that's the case then I would honestly care much less about what you're doing during the clinical experience than about whether it will afford you time to prep for the MCAT.

Take the job that is more chill and will allow you to show you can succeed on the MCAT

You don't need a physician letter (except for DO) but you don't need a longer commute -- use that extra hour each day for ANKI. 😉
Even ENDO should offer some variety with thyroid, pancreas, adrenals, pituitary. Fun stuff and pretty complex.

I vote for private practice. That physician will write a better letter
