Hi all,

I am currently waitlisted post-interview by 2 schools. I also just got a job offer for a clinically related job at a biotech company where I would be flying to different hospitals around the country helping fix medical equipment with technical issues-- the salary offer is 70k with travel and expenses covered. I would be working closely with physicians apparently.

If I don't get off the waitlists, I'm torn between this job and the (much lower paid) scribe position that is common for premeds.

I don't have rich parents so money is a factor, but if scribing would help me more to get into a medical school for a future cycle I think it would be worth it.

Can anyone give me an opinion?

70k? Honestly, if I were you I would take that job, then try and defer for a year if you get in while saving most of it. Then maybe travel for a month or two before matriculating. If you don't get in, you have a job that pays literally twice what most people in your position are making, and will have something new to include in your app if you reapply.

Edit: I was a scribe for a little over a year. It was honestly a really great experience, but I couldn't afford to live off of $10 an hour and kept going into more and more debt. I would have taken the 70k job in a heartbeat.

Categorically false. AdComs honestly couldn't care less about a scribe job. I would still recommend doing something over the next year to add to your app, but forget scribing. Take the $70K offer if you don't get off the wait lists.

Just my 2 cents. Go for the job because it pays well and is definitely more interesting than scribing to adcoms. It's definitely unique. Also, if (touch wood) things don't work out again next cycle, that jobs pads the resume more than scribing.

If you don't mind me asking, what major were you and how did you find this job? I'm kinda interested in it!

That job offer sounds fantastic.. take it. If you get accepted request a deferment. If it's refused.. then make a choice either quit or work for a year and apply again.

Another vote for the $70k job! Not everything you do needs to be medically related. This sounds like a great experience that'll add uniqueness to your app.

Piggy backing off this, I am in need of a salaried job as well and was curious how adcoms might view a job in the IT or finance industry... I am currently on a few waitlists myself (5 actually ) and am figuring out back-up plans as my forebearance on loans is going to be up in August. I don't mean to hijack this thread at all but I feel like I have a similar situation as the OP. Thanks!!

Take the job, save some money, work on your application and apply in the future. The job sounds like a great and unique opportunity.

Good luck!

If I made $70k at my last full-time job, I would have been a very happy person.

Definitely do it as a backup. You have no obligation to be loyal to an employer because they sure as hell aren't loyal to you or any other employee. If an employer wants to lay off people for a specific reason, then they will do so. Don't let guilt factor into this.

Also, do not pick a clinical job instead of this! You aren't blazing any new trails with an entry-level clinical job. Everyone and their mother does them, so they won't make you look unique at all or help you with an application boost. If anything, non-clinical jobs will add more uniqueness to your application. Making way more than $10/hour is a good thing as well.

I will keep this in mind then. There are a few other factors I need to keep in mind such as where my girlfriend and I would live/where she can get a job/grad school/whatever. It would be so much easier if I was just accepted to a medical school 🙁.

Thank you everyone for your advice. I'd rather not reveal where the offer came from because there is already too much personal information on this account, I really do not want it to be directly traceable back to me.
