This is a post that I got off of Rad Working. My question is in regards to the red text. I have seen this on a few other posts. Why would they pay that kind of salary to someone who is still in residency? Do you actually get to do work maybe in your last year for PP worthy of that kind of salary? Is it just somewhat of a commitment to come work for them?

Southwest Arizona group of 7 seeks more radiologists.
* Will look at all but ideal would be Body Imager, general with mammo and someone with nuclear skillls.
* Cover a 330 bed hospital (with medical staff of over 200 physicians) and a group owned Imaging center with 3T, 1.5T and .6T magnets and 64, 32 & 16 slice CT scanners. Full PACS. 17k studies per rad.
* 1:8 call from home with nighthawk at 10pm.
* 400k salary plus monthly stipend while in residency/fellowship.
* 8 weeks off, full benefits, profit sharing.
* 1 year to partnership with no buy in earning in excess of 600k.

Radworking is filled with headhunters. Very few rads go there to find jobs with very good reason. They often grossly misrepresent what is going on at a group and generally only the worst jobs are filled through headhunters. These used car salesmen will throw out huge numbers to get you to send them a CV. Then they will spam groups with your CV and if you sign with them they will claim the 20-30K finders fee. I can tell you that no decent group is going to pay somebody that much money to a resident while they are in training for doing basically nothing. In the current tight job market, there is no group that needs to do that. If the ad sounds ridiculous, it almost certainly has some catch to it.

I highly recommend that you do not use Radworking as a source of what is going on in the radiology job market. The ACR job listings are much better since the last time I checked they do not allow headhunters to post.

I think, and I could me mistaken, that the red text means if you sign with this group during residency, and commit to work there after you finish training, they will provide you with a stipend while you are completing residency. Not to do work, just as an "added bonus" for committing to work with them once finished. You can probably read into that statement that this job is rough- or they would not have so much trouble and have to offer so many incentives to fill it. I have seen this tactic of offering a residency stipend used in other specialties.
