I just job shadowed at UNMC today and it just reminded me why I chose one of the hardest areas of study to major in. It reminded me of why I spend countless hours in the library - sometimes even sleeping there - to achieve the grades that I do. It reminded me how much I want this, and how I will not stop until I am a doctor. After job shadowing, I feel like I have this whole new wave of motivation. Just thought I'd share. I'm so happy that I know this truly is for me.

I'm curious, what difficult area of undergraduate study can you possibly be seeing employed in patient care? Usually engineering, physics etc is only applicable on the research side of biomedicine

What..? I job shadowed and now I have motivation and am excited- not that I didn't have it before. After this semester I was kind down and didn't know what to do. I was feeling like majoring in biomedical engineering was maybe not for me because if I feel like I can't handle studying in the library from 3pm to 6am and then going to 8:30am lecture three times a week then maybe I should reevaluate. But i job shadowed and enjoyed it and I just thought I'd share my excitement. I shadowed a thoracic surgeon. I don't think I said anything about how I shadowed a difficult area and am excited about it...? I'm confused on what you're saying.

Sounds like you're having good experiences in the medical field, which is great.

I think the question is how did shadowing a thoracic surgeon remind you why you chose a difficult major?

I feel like no amount of undergraduate course load should force a student to be consistently studying for 9 hours a day. Don't break your back, man, have some fun...and sleep!

All of the shadowing and exposure to patient care I have done has reminded me how I wished I had picked a non-biology major. Medicine is cool and all, and I can't imagine myself doing anything else. But I really enjoyed physics and math in high school, and now I'll never get to do anything like that ever again.

Oh no I'm not being judgmental. I work in an IM subspecialty clinic and can't think of any time in recent memory I saw anything related to physics or engineering or math! That's why I was wondering

Gotcha well yeah I'm majoring in biomedical engineering but I'd like to be a surgeon. That's why I shadowed a surgeon but I was thinking of changing to biochem. Idk after I shadowed I think I'm going to stick with it. The surgeon I shadowed just told me to major in what I love.

OMG, a practicing physician actually gave you the correct response. Usually they are so far from their days as an aspiring doc that they make a comment that was more relevant to "the good old days."
