Judiciality

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Cheating and stealing seem to be the common ones that derail an application. I haven't seen alcohol treated as an application killer but I haven't had enough experience with pot or other drugs to make a statement about how they are treated by adcoms.

I have one for being in the presence of alcohol and other for marijuana possession. This is under my school record issued by our public safety. The police weren't involved at all. I go to a private university in CA if that helps.

Anything that has to do with ethical lapses, especially academic dishonesty, plagiarism, cheating, etc (however you want to slice it) IMO is far worse than alcohol-related incidents (minor ones IMO, like DIPs, not DUIs). I think that ethical/academic dishonesty issues are more likely to get you denied than alcohol.

I'm no expert, but it doesn't really matter how any of us feel about drug usage - whether it is marijuana or something else, the field of medicine is traditionally conservative. However, I'm sure there are some in the field who openly condemn drug usage (marijuana and other drugs), and privately use, so depending on who looks at your app, one reader may be more forgiving of your past indiscretions than another.

Honesty is the best policy. I don't know if they have access to your judicial record from undergrad, but it's better to get out in front of it by disclosing it, owning up to it and admitting you made a mistake, than to lie or omit it, only to have it compound into a bigger problem later.

Yeah, I read in our student handbook that our records are kept on file for 7 years in case an employer or graduate school decides to look at it but it's only accessible with my signature. Also, it is possible for the Dean of Students to purge your record if an acceptable amount of time has passed so maybe I'll be able to convince him/her to do that.

The school I applied to asked for an evaluation from the dean of students upon granting an interview. The form asked whether any disciplinary action had been taken, etc.

Go to your dean's office and find out whether or not med schools will be able to access the file. Definitely persuade him/her to purge it if you can. A minor alcohol infraction would probably slide, but an alcohol infraction AND possession of marijuana might hurt you.

same occasion, or did you get caught two separate times? how far apart? how long has it been?

It happened at the beginning of this year, my sophomore year. They are my first and second write-ups of college. The presence of alcohol one day and then the very next day the marijuana one occurred. The presence of alcohol one is ridiculous though because I was eating in my friends room and the RA's came because someone had complained of being too noisy and they saw beer cans. I received a $50 fine, an alcohol awareness class, and a parent letter home describing what happened. I appealed it and they rejected the appeal. So to answer your question, it's been about 2 months.

well I hope you can put away the weed and maybe wait until you're 21 to stop drinking. usually a first offense isn't a big deal, but if you are habitually breaking the law, it will reflect very poorly on you

oo thank you. What happened to you was dumb. At my school the RA isn't allowed to knock on your door if they smell marijuana they have to call Public Safety and then they write a report and you have a hearing with a judicial review member. So at my school, you wouldn't have even gotten in trouble and more often than not Public Safety would only knock on the door of the room with the smell, (our suites are two rooms separated by a bathroom, each room with it's own entrance). Your roommate would have been the only one that got in trouble.

You're a college student, have some fun... just don't be an idiot and don't get written up again.

No worries mate. Just towel your door next time. If medical schools call you out on it, here's an idea of how the conversation should go:

Med school person: It says here on your record that you were charged with possession of marijuana. Could you talk about what happened?
You: Yes. My RA caught me smoking the reefer.
Med school person: How has this event changed you, or better yet, what have you learned from this incident?
You: I need to lock and towel the door. Also I should have put up a couple fans facing out towards the windows.
Med school person: (nodding in approval)
You: The worst part about the incident was that my weed got confiscated.
Med school person: Was it dank?
You: The dankest **** ever. Cross between Northern Lights and White Widow with a little hint of the Kush.
Med school person: Wow. You must have been devastated. It's a shame that this had to happen.
You: Yea well, it's in the past. I honestly believe that trials of adversity like this particular incident makes me that much stronger of an individual.
Med school person: And probably a better candidate for med school as well
You: You took the words right out of my mouth
You and Med school person: *hearty laughter

the door was toweled, and there were 3 fans, and thats why its such a quandary that we got caught haha
