would my score from july of 2014 be considered too old for the 2016-2017 application cycle? I did well on it (33) and was planning on applying with the 33 and then retaking the mcat in january 2017..would this be okay?

Why would you retake it in January if you're applying this upcoming cycle? That'd do nothing for you.

You should be fine for most schools. There are only a few schools that require the new 2015 MCAT for the upcoming application cycle. In the case you had to reapply, I would probably schedule the MCAT for later in the season (spring 2017). You don't want to invest all that time and resources into studying for the MCAT since it might be unnecessary. I would probably start prepping in early February if you didn't have any interview invites at that point, since February is nearing the end of the interview season for a number of schools.

In the case OP doesn't get into medical school during this application cycle, OP would probably have to take the new MCAT if he/she re-applies during the 2017 application cycle since a good number of schools only accept the new MCAT at that point.
