July 26 2012 MCAT Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
just at the beginning of content review hopefully i can review everything in time. verbal is killing me 🙁

so far so good. using PR books and EK 101. trying to finish content review soon so i can start doing some practice tests

You guys don't feel that applying late August is too late? I was considering re taking my exam in July

From what I've read and heard, July is usually the very latest people take the MCAT and still apply in this cycle. The key is to have everything else prepared on time (if not earlier) to minimize the effect of the late MCAT. Submit early in June, get verified, and have your secondaries all written by the time you get your MCAT score!

Retaker from 5/31 here...I can't believe we only have 17 posts?! I guess not many people are taking this one

Finally decided to grow a pair and search for the 7/26/2012 MCAT thread. I've been too reluctant and by the looks of it, not many people are trying to take this one. Well, it's good to see some people on the same boat as me. I was on the verge of a massive burn out today when I decided enough is enough and I put my books aside and took this day to just relax. Been running on high octane the past 2 weeks.

I'd like to know how many of y'all are losing sleep because of this test? The past week or so has been tough on my sleeping patterns. I really just want to get this thing over with!!

Practice tests I've done have been all the GS exams (although not similar to the AAMC, very good practice especially for the money) and of course AAMC's. I've done the free Kaplan one and the PR one.

How is everyone else's preparation going along??

bout damn time we got some activity here. had to use the 7/27 thread.

yea looks like theres not too many of us.

going smoothly so far. taking aamc 11 later on and then 9 on friday and 10 on monday.

just reading through TPR's science review questions & solutions which turned out to be a good resource.

-fyi good idea to go and check out the testing center ahead of time. planning to drive to mine tomorrow so i dont get any surprises on test day

I am also taking the July 26th Exam.. First timer here, and I only had 7 weeks to study after my baseball season got over.. Hoping for the best!!! Scores on practices have been from 14's to 28's.. and they are getting more consistent.

Only had a Barron's book, and some MCAT flash cards as well as a bunch of practice tests online that my friends passed to me. Been quite the grind the last few weeks but good luck everyone!

I don't know if its just me, but I tend to make A LOT of careless mistakes on the PS. The one thing I will never forget is when I did 300/60 = 20. I mean...yea...

I recently took AAMC 7 and I got HAMMERED on that PS because of dumb DUMB mistakes. And same with the BS, I keep rushing because I think I don't have enough time and end up finishing BS with 20 minutes to spare (very bad). Had I not made dumb mistakes I would have ended up with a 32. I instead got...rather not talk about it =P

What are your experiences with these exams? Any careless mistakes, or am I the only one foolish enough to be doing those kind of dumb things 🙁

Hi Everyone!!!
I am also taking the July 26th MCAT.

I gave 5 AAMC Exams and planning to give remaining four (6,8,9 and 11) by thursday. Here are my scores
AAMC 7 (today) PS 13 / VR 4😡 / BS 12 = 29
AAMC 5 (7/16) PS 12 / VR 5😡 / BS 9 = 26
AAMC 3 (7/13) PS 12 / VR 7 / BS 13 = 32
AAMC 4 (6/17) PS 11 / VR 6 / BS 10 = 27
AAMC 10 (5/28) PS 9 / VR 4 / BS 9 = 22 (Diagnostic Exam)

I also gave most of the TPR Test (6/7) and Scored from 24-29 ( again verbal usually from 4-7 🙁 )

I hope I can pull off 8 on verbal. English isn't my first language so I am really struggling with Verbal Section. Anyone have any ideas/opinion to share regarding Verbal Section? I really want that 8. I could really use any help.

Good luck to all for the Exam! Let's kill it!

I took AAMC 7 today got an 8, 8, 10. I made some really dumb mistakes in PS. Also verbal really frustrates me. TPR always tells you to guess on one passage, if I would have put all C's for the one I guessed on I could have ended up with a 10 verbal score according to the scoring scale. The highest score I've gotten on a practice has been 28, starting to get a little worried

i hear you guys. stuck at 27-30. always seem to miss a point by one or two questions. just finished aamc 11- i know what people mean when they say BS is a lot more like verbal. questions require you to understand an experiment, the variables, control etc

In the past week or two I've taken aamc 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11. It's so weird bc in bs and ps I've gotten a 10&12, 12&10, or 11&11 on all of them. They have always added up to 22! I don't know why I can't get a 12&12. My verbals have been between 6-10 so I know that is really what I need to focus on :/
I'm ready for this test to be over...I'm getting so burnt out

Just a week left guys! I am getting really sick of all this studying and what not as well...for the last few days before the test, do you guys recommend taking another practice AAMC or just take it easy and review concepts, flash cards, Audio Osmosis, something along those lines??

thats crazy bc i had the EXACT same thing happen to me. are you talking about the last passage? i wouldve gotten a 9 though. i despise verbal...

I'm also wondering what I should be doing with this last week....

I'm also wondering what I should be doing with this last week....
I am relaxing by playing video games, watching Buffy/Angel and pro wrestling, and eating delicious snacks like pizza rolls and corn dogs.

I am also doing very light review and making sure I have the equations memorized. I might do some problems on my less strong areas, but other than that I am just trying to make sure I am in a good place mentally come exam time. It isn't like an extra week will get me what 2 months didn't content-wise.

This sounds like an AWESOME idea, I was going to go through with something like this and now I know I will
For this week I am waking up whenI would for test day every day and going to bed when I would for test day. I also grabbed season 10 of Family Guy and made a list of movies I want to watch. I'll also be trying to get some sweet unlocks in Mass Effect 3 multiplayer 😎

I know we all will be great. We all studied as hard as we could. Let's all go out there and have some fun with this test! 😛

Just finished.I have mixed feelings on how I think I did, but overall I thought that was a little tough. I left thinking I could have done ok but also thinking I could have messed up some easy ones. Bio def had some goofy stand alone questions and some tough O chem questions. Hoping for a little leniency on the scoring. Didn't think verbal was too bad, except for one passage which I skipped and didn't have too much time on at the end. And I normally get stomped out by verbal so who knows. Physical science section was a lot of chemistry I thought. I got a 28 on AAMC 11 so my goal was a 28-29. I hope I can get a 26-27. Anybody else take it today and have opinions?

I just finished and didn't think there was anything that looked too crazy but my biggest problem was this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZ80bIUEMyQ

I was the last one admitted so right when I got to verbal the first ****er was starting the writing section. This went on for the remainder of the test. I could not for the **** life of me concentrate on one sentence let alone the entire passage. ****ers typing like it's the interview from swordfish. Don't get me started on those non-adjustable noise amplifying ****phones they give you. If you haven't already guessed, I voided my score.

i feel the same as you in regards to not knowing how i did. i was averaging around 30-31 on the practice tests w/verbal always being between 6-9. and sciences never lower than 10.

i thought there were some tough ones on PS...i had to laugh at the first passage bc i looked over that literally last night. really no background knowledge required since they gave everything to you though. did anyone think there was a mistake with one of the answer choice's exponents on one of the chem passages? i must've been overlooking something easy...

verbal was actually not terrible for once! this section usually kills me. but overall the passages were pretty easy to read...i think at least haha.

bio was alright...some fairly difficult ochem questions in my opinion. along with random discretes that i thought were tough :/

im just glad its over so i can actually have a life now. good luck to everyone!

My thoughts:

The PS was pretty tough. Even though I answered all the questions, I only got to look at about half my marked questions which is out of the ordinary for me.

I thought the content of the VR was easier than normal, but the questions were on par with what I've seen in the past.

I thought the BS was remarkably easy. I even had time to go back and do the two passages over again that I thought were most difficult. I do know I goofed on a standalone already so I hope I didn't just glaze the whole section.

I took the MCAT in 2010 and got an 11 10 10 31Q, I would say in difficulty this one was very similar (hard PS, easier verbal, moderate BS). I entered an MPH program after undergrad and am planning on entering medical school in 2014. I retook because many schools wanted a more recent MCAT. I was also hoping to improve on my 31, but after taking the test I feel like I scored right around there. My last two GS scores were 35, 35 and on AAMC 10 I got a 37, but I felt they were alot easier than the real thing.

PS: I thought was tough, not very calculation heavy, mostly concepts/ concepts that had to be modified in your head.

VR: I feel neutral about it, some questions were harder than others but overall the passages were pretty interesting!

BS: I thought this was the hardest section, orgo was brutal at times and the bio passages were pretty advanced... Although it was very similar with AAMC 11 in terms of difficulty and convolution of info in the passages.

It's time for me to finally work on some secondaries! :luck: everyone!

glad to be done

though PS was tricky, VR was decent, BS was decent

hoping for the best.

gotta get those secondaries done now

I thought PS was really weird (second passage was really tough) and Texas7, I also think there was an error in one of the exponents...

Verbal was alot easier than usual? I felt pretty confident about my answers.

BS had some tricky Orgo sections

(The sciences were alot harder than the AAMC's while the verbal was easier)

PS was fine half way through until getting a question I had no idea about. Spent a good deal more time on that than I should have and as a result, the rest of the PS was rushed.

Verbal wasn't as bad (to me) as other practice tests have been, I felt relatively confident coming out of it.

Essay was fun to do, I enjoyed them and it was a pseudo break for me.

BS either went "okay" or "****ty". 😡

Averages have been from 27-30 for practice tests. My guess for this one is:
PS- 10 (if I get lucky)
V- 11 or 12
BS- 9 or 10

I would be thrilled to get above a 30. It's going to be a worrisome month. 🙁

PS was a doozy! (in other words, tough)
Verbal felt like a breeze
Essay was cool. Not that we care about the essay.
Bio was about what I expected.

Practice tests in the 31-32 range; I'm expecting a 29 or maybe even lower since I had more trouble than usual with the PS. Hoping for a 30.

This was a retake for me from April 5.. I think?
PS- maybe it was because my first one was insane.. but didn't feel too bad
Verbal- About on par
Biology- Normally my strongest subject by far, pretty tough orgo, and even some tricky biology.

Good Luck to everyone though turned out well, go grab you a beer.

I agree about the exponent being wrong in that PS question. Glad other people mentioned it.

There was a bio discrete question that was either a very nuanced biochem question (the answer to which is not particularly easy to find online) or a poorly worded giveaway question. I went with the giveaway answer, but I'm :scared:
