All of the practice MCATs have been updated to CBT's, i.e. less questions etc.
I have all the old R's on file, and I'm using them to practice from.
How different are they? Am I harming myself by only studying from the R's, which are longer, on the assumption thatb they're even more taxing than the real thing?
I've actually only taken 3R, and I did good on it, but from what I hear over here, that's the easiest of the lot.
So- CBT vs. R?
Thanks for the tip. Just wondering what makes you feel that the Kaplan FL's are so far from the real thing? I will say having taking 3 of them my scores have been all over the map when compared to the AAMC tests(which I suppose is an indication in and of itself) but part of me needs that 33 on Kaplan FL #6 to be legit 😳
Then again my other Kaplan tests might as well be flushed down the drain, anyways thanks for the advice, I think that is probably the best course of action although I do need to finish the KP's for the high score gurantee( which is far less important than an actual high score).
I guess for me, I've done most of my review through the EK prep books (tend to like them better overall...) but have done all the Kaplan reading at least once, and I'm going over them again (quickly) to see if they offer any further insight. I'm fairly confident on my knowledge of content, and I've taken Kaplan FL 1-3, AAMC 3 & 4, and my scores have been pretty stable ~35 on my last 3 tests. I've done a lot of the Kaplan material online, but not all of it, and I think it's best at this point to concentrate on AAMC stuff. This means that I dont really want to take the time to do Kaplan FL 4-5, and the rest of the required section quizzes and whatnot. However, if I were to retake, I think using the Kaplan material as further means of practice would be extremely valuable, especially since it cost me $2000...
I find Kaplan overall to have been extremely helpful--I had a good teacher, the review books were good to supplement EK, all the review problems, Kaplan & AAMC FL's, etc.
P.S. I wasted all of last night watching the Cavs vs. Pistons game and just wasted the last hour watching the Democratic debate. Why can't I motivate myself????🙁
😱is anyone else here abnormally nervous about this test??
i mean, i've taken a lot of tests in my life, from high school, to PSAT, SAT, SAT II, ACT, to midterms and final exams in undergrad worth a lot of my grade. sure, i'm a little scared beforehand, but not anywhere near the extent of how worked up i am over this stupid MCAT. I feel like this is a life or death situation even though i KNOW its not. I keep telling myself the worst thing that can happen is to retake or take a year off, but my emotions do not match what my brain's logic.😱
Eeeeks. AAMC 5 time. Wish me luck.
AAMC 5 (supposed to be another easy one...)
PS: 13
VR: 10
BS: 12
Overall: 35...again.
Can't seem to break a 35 on the AAMC CBTs. PS was very calculation heavy (but not hard...just lots of numbers). And in both VR and BS, I was basically murdered on one passage each...
I was hoping to break 35, since my PS jumped from 10-11-13, but my verbal has been dropping 12-11-10..., and my BS 13-13-12. Booo. BOOO.
Guess I've hit my peak? Just hope to maintain it on 6/15. I just wanted to get a little higher so I would feel better psychologically. haha.
I just finished half of AAMC 5,
PS=will do tonight
VR=10
BS=9
Which passage killed? On BS I thought it was really short one about viroids or something, seemed easy but i missed all except one! 😕
On verbal I think it was that government one.
to you all 😀10 More Days of studying left!!!
I did AAMC 8 and got a 30 on it! I'm SOOO happy! I'm gonna use that confidence to push to the end!
I took 9 and 10 previously, and 9 was the easiest of the 3 while 10 was the hardest.
Thankfully, for the BS on 8, my upper-level courses helped me(especially on the last passage with microfilaments that I learned in the last unit of Cell Bio last semester).
Now i'm just gonna keep doing a verbal passage per day and REVIEW A LOT especially physio(my weak spot), and keep practicing passages till I barf.
to you all 😀

I'm starting to feel like the MCAT is complete luck. Mainly, because there's such variation in content and difficulty of sections between administrations, but also because how you feel you're doing on a practice MCAT seems to be completely unrepresentative. I was SURE that I did really well on the PS section of CBT 7, and I got an 8! I just took CBT 8 and felt like there was NO WAY I was going to get about a 7 or 8 in PS, and I got a 10! I guess the moral of the story is not to let it affect you during the real test. Even if I feel like I've just bombed the PS section on the real MCAT I'll try to ignore the feeling and not let it get me down for the other sections.
Knuxnole: I'm right there with you. SO freaking happy as well. Just took CBT 8 and got a 30 too! Funny, but I heard 8 was a lot harder than 6, and yet I got the same exact score and breakdown as I got last week when I took 6:
PS 10, VR 11, BS 9
I'll be ECSTATIC if that's what I get on the real thing. I don't know why my PS scores finally jumped from an 8 to a 10, but I'm not complaining! The only thing I really can't figure out is my BS score. I've been studying almost purely bio for the past 2-3 weeks, and yet my score has gone DOWN! My bio scores, in order, are: 8, 10, 11, 9, 9, 9. Looks like I'm consistently getting 9s now. Urgh. And bio is my best subject, and I really feel I understand the material. No idea what to do about that.
As for VR, I'm almost running out of time now, but I'm getting consistent about getting 11s. I just hope I can keep PS up around a 9 or 10 on AAMC 9 and 10, and somehow improve bio. I've mainly been doing EK 1001 bio questions. Any suggestions?
Think I'll take 10 next, around Friday, and then 9. Certainly don't want to end on a hard practice.... Luck to the rest of you!
agreed. scores tend to hover in a 3 pt range per section, but depending on your luck, mood, and state of mind, scores can vary drastically.
what do you guys think about the fact that AAMC supposedly "stole" 2 old Kaplan passages for the 5/31 exam?
The BS on 8 had a lot more orgo than usual...not my strong point, so I didn't do as well on that section compared to the rest of the test. Did you guys think the VR was easier than normal. I had been getting 6-8 on the Kaplan tests and this is the first aamc I have done in a long time and I got a 9. I'm not sure if I can attribute that too an easier than norm VR section or the fact that Kaplan VR sucks.
I actually thought that the BS section of CBT 7 had more orgo than 8. But I got a 9 on both, so perhaps that's the real reason that my 10 and 11 on previous BS tests have turned into 9s on recent BS sections. Must be the orgo! Let's just hope that we get an orgo-light version like the May 31st MCAT-takers got. My friend took it on April 7th and said it was VERY orgo heavy. He was usually getting 12s on BS on practice AAMC MCATs and got a 9 on the real thing - he ascribes it purely to orgo.
I thought that VR was pretty much like the other VR sections of the AAMC MCATs. The only one I thought was brutal was CBT 5 (the only test I dropped below a 10 on), and mainly just because of one silly passage (Picasso). But then again, my problem is that one messy Humanities passage they tend to throw in.
I think that if you got a 9 on VR on CBT 8, you're definitely improving. From what I've heard, most people think the PS and VR on 8 were pretty hard.
just finished AAMC 5...
PS-13
VR -14
BS-12
needless to say I was shocked...I found this test to be extremely difficult (lol I also started at like 9pm...) and guessed through many passages...hope that I guess as well on the real thing!
I don't think that AAMC stole Kaplan passages...Kaplan probably stole and modified them from a past administration, and when AAMC reused the passages the Kaplan kids were familiar with them!
14?? MY GOD. Are you a troll?
I thought I did super good in the verbal for AAMC5, and I got a 10, I was pretty pissed, I felt I understood each passage, so I thought I'd get maybe a 12. What's your strategy? How do you read the passage and eliminate answers? In order or.. what?
Hm, great plan, I will try that for next time.lol VR has always been my strongest section...the best advice I can give you is to forget everything that PR and Kaplan teach you about this section, and read over the EK advice.
I do the passages in order (really, flipping through ANY section of the mcat is just a waste of time:S) and I read through each passage carefully just once, as if I were reading a novel. By the end of the passage, before I move onto the questions, I tell myself what the main point of the passage was, and who it could be written by (journalist, poet, lawyer etc)....then I move onto the questions and I answer then like EK suggested; read the question, and from the question stem I try to figure out what the answer could be. I've never read a passage more then once, or gone back to it....rather than worrying about the stupid details of the passages, I find that if I get the main point down, I can answer all of the questions w/o looking back. Most importantly, I follow my gut and try not to overthink about the answers!
does anyone know how well kaplan full length scores and aamc cbt practice scores translate? I've been hearing from the May31 group that the actual test is quite different, which has me worried.
so far for kaplan full length I have 29, 39, 39
aamc CBT3 12, 10, 13 PS/VR/BS
aamc CBT4 15, 12, 12, got blindsided by some orgo questions in the BS, I worried that the AAMC practices are easier than the real thing
I took AAMC CBT 6 and the verbal raped my score completely. I was doing relatively fine on the other exams. I hate when the topics are literature and history.
.... but somehow got an 11 😕Where did you hear about them not using alkene/alkynes?
I was looking over the MCAT topic list, didn't see alkene, and another poster mentioned no armomatic stuff except for roles in acidity and bascity. But with kaplan devoting two chapters to the topics, I'm not sure.
I saw selenoid, toroid, gauss law and some other weird stuff on the MCAT topic list. BUt haven't seen any of those questions yet.
Yeah right...that would be nice...I gotta buddy in the 8:30 section. 😛Two test times: 8AM and 1:30PM
I am taking the 1:30 PM test. I wonder if the two tests will overlap at all regarding the questions...hmm.
Just took AAMC CBT 6, which had a different feeling to it than 3-5
PS: 13
VR: 11
BS: 12
Overall: 36
The PS on this one was laughably easy (an entire passage on the periodic table!!). Normally, I am weak in PS, but I only missed 4 Q's (1 Q away from 14, 2 Q's away from a 15...), two of which were stupid.
On the contrary, I thought the verbal was challenging, and the bio was really tough. I counted about ~20 orgo questions compared to the usual 12ish. Threw me off...
Time to review orgoooo....
Hey artaxerxes! I was wondering where you saw the MCAT topic list? Was it from AAMC or one of the test prep companies? I heard that they changed the topics covered on the MCAT, but I'm not sure where to find the site that lists the updated topics.
can i just say .. who are you people!? You guys do SO well on VR!!! I get like 8 and 9 on VR and it's just awful. but on PS .. i mean c'mon! that section is a gimme! (i get 12-13 consistent on aamc practice) ... i mean the section is so straightforward .. i love bio too it's so easy always i always get a 10 it's just like a love tap when ur nearing the end of the exam it's so chill ahhhh
