As a student from the state of Ohio attending Michigan State, it irks me when people refer to MSU as "Michigan" and Ohio State as "Ohio". If you end up at MSU for vet school and tell people you go to "Michigan", they will assume you mean University of Michigan, our arch rival in Ann Arbor, and people may proceed to throw things at you (just kidding, but seriously, they won't exactly be welcoming you with open arms). Likewise, if you tell people you go to school at "Ohio", that indicates Ohio University to most people in the region.

I realize that MSU and OSU are the only vet schools in their respective states, so it may seem to make sense to call them just Michigan or Ohio. And this is just a pet peeve of mine. But I thought you should know. 🙂

Having no more than 1 vet college per state (with the exception being Alabama) people in the veterinary world tend to know that "florida" means UF, etc.

Umm, I think thelarson is referring to the post I made yesterday entitled "Michigan"... sorry to offend, but living halfway across the country doesn't lend itself to knowing each particular nuance of each individual state.

I agree with Auburn, but next time I'll try harder??

Let's just say this...if Michigan State accepts me, I'll make it my top priority to get it right. 🙂

While it's definitely true that people in the region generally think of Michigan as UMich, when you say Ohio in Ohio people generally think of OSU first, as opposed to OU, probably just because of the size.

hmmm, well why isnt it TOSU anyway? Ohio State makes a big point that they are THE Ohio State University, not just Ohio State University.

Yes, but on the other hand, it's driving me crazy when I tell people I'm in the MSU-CVM class of 2011 and they *assume* it's Michigan State, when it's actually Mississippi State, and both schools are indeed known as MSU. Just because we're the smaller school, we shouldn't be forgotten! 🙂

Within the profession I find that most people know your correct school if you just say your state (eg: North Carolina [State] vs [University of] Penn), but to people outside the profession you almost always need to clarify unless they live around one of the vet schools (usually people are always surprised to find that there's only one school in their state, if that!)

ha, when talking to non-animal/vet people i *always* say University of Pennsylvania, otherwise they're *sure* i mean Penn State Univeristy.

A lot of people make a big point of it as there are several branch campuses of OSU around the state, and just because we are so proud of our University 😉. But in acronyms most of the times words like "the" aren't represented.

As for the confusion, I know people brought up the fact that they get annoyed being mistaken for OSU when it is really another school - but what can you say, there are perks to being the biggest University in the country!

Really TOSU should be renamed UF #2 because we own them so much =P.

(Joke)

Speaking of North Carolina...

I was told by a native that you cannot, ever, refer to NC State as "North Carolina" - but always refer to it as "NC State" or, simply, "State" ... due to the rivalry between "State" and ... uhm... University of NC in Chapel Hill, was it?

So, anyway, "North Carolina" must be called "North Carolina State" - or, better, "NC State" or "State"!

Something I never would've realized or known coming from NJ ... and now I'm very careful out here about always saying "K State" and not just "Kansas" due to the whole KU vs. KSU thing!

Alrighty... back to "the bones"! (Hip bone's connected to the...)

This post wasn't started in response to a certain thread or person, but to a trend I've seen that I just thought should be addressed, if not for more than just fyi reasons. 🙂

This is fairly true, although I've always found (as a UNC alum) that "Carolina" is automatically University of North Carolina, and "State" is North Carolina State. "North Carolina" has always been a little vague, and in local's minds may be more associated with UNC, but I feel like the only automatic association is saying "Carolina" by itself 🙂 Go 'Heels!

While I completely understand the pet peeve, I prefer it to be spelled out because I've seen many people say MSU and they mean Michigan or Mississippi and OSU can be Ohio, Oklahoma, or Oregon. At least for this board, I like to know which school they're talking about.

In WI, universities are always referred to by whatever city they are located in (Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay, etc) because they are all University of Wisconsin- fill in the blank. So, while OS people refer to University of Wisconsin Madison-School of Vet Med as just plan Wisconsin, everyone around here calls it Madison.

I agree and disagree, wivet2011. Although I'm more of the mindset 'I go to Madison', I know a ton of people who are thoroughly convinced that there ARE no other schools in the UW system and simply say 'I go to Wisconsin.'
