I've heard of students who attend medical school (i assume MD) and either shortly after matriculating or years into school they suddenly realize they've made a mistake. Some drop out before getting their degree, some finish it just to have the degree since they've invested so much time and money but do not go on to become practitioners. I was wondering if this also occurs in osteopathic medical schools?

probably...

DO is a practical equivalent of MD school, lifestyle wise and career wise.

Yes it does... I know of someone personally and others from other osteopathic medical schools that this was the case.

This is not a matter of whether or not its an MD or DO.... It's about life choices.

Like anything else in life, you may realize that the path you've chosen is not what you really intended to do and not something you truly enjoy.

You're values in the long run will never be compromised.

I know a doc I worked with in urgent care that this happened too. What she does is just works part time, like 12 hours a week, at the urgent care to make money. She still does not like it, but its "not too bad since she does not have to deal with any other spects of medicine other than seeing patients 12 hours a week."

What does she do with the rest of her time?

I don't know, I never asked. I just know she hates medicine. One a the few docs I met that told me NOT to do it.

wow, i hope shes at least making enough to pay her student loans back! like everyone else said, attrition rate (esp. among MS1s) is probably the same at both MD/DO schools. thats why we're expected to really try to live like a med student while in college...doing volunteer work, making the grades, etc.

Her husband is a doc too, and I know he has a full time practice, so i assume money is not really an issue.
