Just Ace'd my exam but unhappy

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got the third highest grade on my O-Chem exam...(Solid A), but I am not happy b/c it wasn't 100%. Im not proud of the fact that I am unhappy unless I am the best. Comments?

Yes you should be very miserable. Unless you get the #1 spot, you're a complete FAILURE. 😛

Geez.

Lol...when I first read this thread I thought "OP=tool"..but I just found out I barely missed being at the top spot in my organic class as well. So I definitely can understand feeling a little frustrated/let down...if I had only worked harder I could have gotten that sweet satisfaction of being the best. Oh well, haha.

You sound like my friend who gets the second highest organic chemistry scores, but he's unhappy because he's very competitive. I don't think its good to be very competitive.... soon you might be trying to get into medical school only because of the competition to be the best and not because you really want to... if you know what i mean. you should be satisfied and content with your A.

I think it's a personality type. As long as I do just enough to get what I want(and getting an A by itself is more than enough for O.Chem), I'm good. Hopefully this attitude doesn't kill me in med school this year. :scared:

Unless it's someone very obscure, I think it's Caligula

I've noticed. I had a bio professor tell me than it would not be good if I kept getting A-'s as far as medical school acceptance.

Seriously, my professors must get their info from this here Pre-Allo forum on SDN.

I'd just like to update this. I just got back from meeting with my OChem professor and he told me if someone doesn't have a 3.9 or 4.0 they don't have much a chance at medical school, and said if someone had a 3.75 he would be worried about them not even getting into dental school.

This is the same professor that told me I have to worry about more than just getting an A in his class, that my ranking compared to the others with As matters.

Funny thing is I was going to ask him for a rec letter, but after that there is NO WAY I want this guy writing me anything having to do with me getting into medical school.

Aren't you glad he's not your premed advisor?👍

Did you point out that he was an O-chem professor?

"As a leading researcher in the field of Amide Catalysis, it's important that I develop and disseminate random delusions to my premedical students... No one cares about Amide Catalysis..."

I was tempted to ask him why the average GPA is around a 3.75 then every year. Thank god I'm transferring schools next semester.

It is funny that you bring this up b/c it completely describes my Organic Chem Prof. Prior to his class, I was THRILLED b/c I got an A; he has turned me into this competitive prick that needs to be #1 to be happy. In the beginning, I was set on asking him for a Rec., but I am rethinking this. His recommendation will most likely end up being something along the lines of....(Student's name) was ranked 3 of 100 in my class..etc etc.
