I'm just curious what your ultimate goal is. I know we're all pre-med or maybe even in medical school currently, but what would you like to specialize in and why?
Thanks! 🙂

Surgeon General--for fame & glory of course!!!!

JK, actually Peds anesthesia due to a love of kids and 1st hand experience working with the OR staff with my own kiddo's.

I'm just curious what your ultimate goal is. I know we're all pre-med or maybe even in medical school currently, but what would you like to specialize in and why?

I'm very interested in anesthesiology then maybe a fellowship in pain management - growing up we had a family friend who was an anesthesiologist and had the opportunity to shadow him in high school. Pain management becuase I've had to deal with pretty bad back/radicular pain for a while and know first-hand how debilitating and how negative an impact chronic pain can have. The idea of putting someone to sleep and eliminating pain is fascinating to me.

Emergency medicine is also high on the list. The hours, variety of cases, and the occasional real emergency seems like it would make for a good balance for me.

This is a hard question because it often changes as we become more knowledgable about the field. Currently, I want to be either a radiologist or anesthesiologist. The former because of the lifestyle which will allow me to pursue academia and a family life. The latter because I feel that its this field and perhaps ID which will allow me to utilize my knowledge with the greatest impact.

I'm open to pretty much anything including primary care. I know that it can change several times during med school and am also aware of the competitiveness of some of the specialties.

From the workload stories, I think surgery may be off the list though. I dont want to be working so much that I have a grumpy personality. I would want something that gives me the option to open my own practice though, which seems to rule out Emergency Medicine.

My goal is to become a physician researcher, devoting a considerable portion of my practice to serving the poor. I have volunteered in a children's hospital and I love working with children, so I hope that will be part of my practice. To that end, I hope to get into the best medical school and seek out the best training I can get. While medical genetics and neurology fascinate me, I will defer setting a particular specialty as a goal until I have a better understanding of the nature of the work in those fields.

I probably want an academic non-research position. Fields are pretty wide open but I'm not interested in obgyn and surgery (but keeping an open mind).

If I had to decide today, probably EM. I say this because this is where the majority of my medical experience and exposure has been over the years. This may change once I gain more exposure to different specialties. That said, any of the surgical specialties are probably out of the question due to my "advanced age." (Plus I really just don't want to.)

Captain Cliche here... Sugery. Any type of surgery really, but I've been considering Ortho or general/trauma. Love pressure/high intensity situations. Time and exposure will really tell where I end up though.

Given the amount of time I've spent around MRIs, radiology was my first inclination. However, I like interacting with people, so I nixed that. Emergency medicine is holding my interest so far, but we'll see.

My ultimate goal is to become an Optometrist. I retire from the Air Force in less than 4 years and really look forward to moving on. Currently working towards my Bach in Science, trying to finish it while the Air Force still pays for it 🙂

Good question.

I'm definitely trying to keep an open minded, I tend to be interested in everything. The main requirement I have is that I want to go into something that allows me to do international service work. I'm also very interested in research so I'd be very surprised if I didn't wind up in academic medicine.

I'm from the sticks, but I live in Washington D.C. now. I want to eventually go back to my home area and be a rural family physician.

pediatrics. i especially have a passion for working with teen parents and their children, which i figure pediatrics will allow me to do.

I second that. I really want to go into Family Medicine with OB (if possible, the risks are quite high), ideally in a rural southern area with emphasis on the poor and underserved....OR practicing back home in Detroit also with the same emphasis ( but maybe without OB).

Yay for Primary Care, not to diss anyone else...😀

No offense taken. My dad's been a primary care/internal medicine doc for 30+ years - one of his first words of wisdom to me was "specialize so you can afford your debt" lol. I'd love to join his practice some day, so internal medicine or family practice is still definitely on the list 🙂

I really would like to work in academic medicine with a mix of clinical, research, and teaching. I am leaning toward Infectious Disease but kind of intrigued by Anesthesiology and GI. Don't know if I am going to be competitive enough for either of the last two, though.

I think I would like infectious disease just because I have always been intrigued by microbiology and (I think) in many cases you could actually cure people. ID is also a field that often lands you a job in academia from what I have heard. I think I would like all the pharmacology involved in Anes but worry it might be too stressful for me. I am, after all, a very old nontrad! The procedures in GI are cool.

Your Dad is right, as a matter of fact my Dad (who knows NOTHING about the medical field) decided I should go for GI or any of the ROADS for that reason exactly! LOL

nephrology - complex, interesting, you can see really sick patients in the hospital, but you can also see patients in out-patient primary care setting. we'll see how much i take to IM and lots of rounding.

I want to do ER or internal medicine in an urban hospital. I also want to teach at community colleges...

As far as specialties go...Im interested in Cardiology and educating those about cardiac condtions ensuring longer lives and healthier hearts(hopefully!!), but when it comes down to it I want to see a variety of patients and could see myself working in a Fam Practice environment as well. Sports Medicine also an area of interest, being a sports nut would love to work for a pro team.

I want to spend a considerable amount of time helping those less fortunate, and whether I continue in the Miltary or not i'd like to travel, maybe do Doctors Without Borders, Do work in Central/South America(Im fluent Spanish) and maybe work in some urban areas in the states. Would like to do so early in career, before getting settled and all..

I'm entirely partial to cardiology, mainly interventional cardiology, because I've worked on a Cardiology floor and rotated PRN on a Cardiac ICU (both surgical and non) for four years as a sec/tech. Other major considerations are general surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery, pulmonology/intensivist, ER, hospitalist (IM), interventional radiology and anesthesiology. I'm trying to keep an open mind -- though, it seems that my open mind is slowly narrowing down. I've ruled out family practice, ob-gyn, peds, psych, neuro, heme/onc and ID, plus most surgical specialties not mentioned. So, not so open minded after all?
