I failed the CIS component of the test. All my evals during 3rd and 4th years consistently praised me for communication skills and building rapport with the patients. I am applying for IM in Cali and it seems like the majority of the programs there will want to see the score before ranking which I will not have in time since the earliest for a retake is in Jan which means score won't be out until March. I am so dead. I am an AMG from a mid tier school and my step 1&2 were 227 and 240.

1) Earliest date to retake is Jan 4th. Is there any other option????
2) 2 attempts to pass CS means you are in the bottom of the rank list right???
3) What should I do now?? I applied to 40 programs already but most in MA or CA and my dean told me they want to see CS pass before ranking.
4) What is the latest you could report the score before they rank you??

Sorry to hear that. I'm not sure which programs require CS to rank, but get the Jan 4th date anyway and get on the emailing list for earlier openings... I remember getting emails almost daily about spots that became open. Also, from what I understand the ICE component you can improve on a lot with some practice. Get the first aid cs book and work on differentials and writing your notes. Good luck, wish you the best!

How do you get on that email list??

Got to nbme.org and log in. The go the link that says step 2 cs scheduling, then there should be an option to get email notifications for earlier dates. I think you only get this option if you already have a test date scheduled though.

Thanks. Does anybody know how to use check4change to keep track of earlier dates opening up? Do you just hightlight the whole calendar? I plan to open 5 tabs for each test site so I know all the spots that open up and link it to my email. Would it work that way? I have never used check4change before.

There's a guy you can email and he'll get you a CS date within a couple of weeks. He charges $90. I used him to get me a date. He has MANY positive feedback from students on usmle-forum or usmle-forums.com (whichever site has the blue, yellow, and white colors. Can't tell you the exact site, as I'm on the hospital wifi and it's blocked here.) Go to the USMLE STEP 2 CS portion and look for a thread started by "natcruze" or so. If not, you can email him directly, which is [email protected]. I attached the screenshot of my conversation with him from earlier in the summer so you can get an idea of the process.

If you don't mind sharing about your experience, I would greatly appreciate it. I got my score yesterday, but haven't checked the results yet, as I'm worried about not having passed.

This looks so shady!! Is it even legal to do this? because if you get caught by USMLE/NBME, then you are doubly screwed.

How is that shady? He's running a script called "Check4Change" on multiple monitors so that he can get you the date you want in a certain time slot. All he's doing is getting you a test date, nothing else.

At least I got an earlier test date. I will have a pass before ranking. Anybody has an idea how this affect your app? I know for IMG a fail in CS is a very big deal but there is so little data on how it affects AMG I don't know how bad this is hurting my app.

Has anyone ever used this guy?

Get Check4Change and run the script yourself for free. There is no reason to pay someone else to do this (especially $90). I'm technologically-impaired and still managed to get it to work after a few minutes of fiddling with the program (just highlight the dates you're interested in, right click, change the refresh rate to 10s, and keep it on that page). A surprising amount of CS movement occurs in the middle of the night, so keep it on overnight for desirable dates, and allow yourself time for results to pop up. Best of luck.
