Hello!

I just finished my DAT (4th time's a charm!) and I was wondering what my chances are this cycle.

DAT
BIO 20
GC 24
OC 19
PAT 23
RC 21
QR 17
TS:21 AA:20

Undergrad GPA: 2.9 Science Undergrad GPA: 2.7
Master GPA: 3.6
(How do schools factor in a master's program? I know the reason I didn't get any interviews previous cycles was my GPA)

335 hours working as an x-ray tech for mobile dentist
55 hours shadowing general dentist
200 hours volunteering in the community
1000 hours of research
3 publications with my name
President of pre-dental society
Worked for years in a bio-tech lab

It's just been so hard to get past my undergrad GPA. I know I messed up big, but I've been doing everything in my power to try and do whatever it takes to get in.

I've applied to:
Michigan
Detroit Mercy
Tufts
Nova
Midwestern
Case Western
Temple

I agree, you should definitely increase the school list. It'll give you a better chance of getting interviews and acceptances. Also, great job on your masters! I hope to do as well as you in my masters. Good Luck!

If I was in your shoes, I would consider applying to more schools. You want to maximize your chances of getting in. Your stats are good btw! Good luck!

FYI...make sure you emphasize your ec's in the interviews. They are worth mentioning again!

Thanks for all your replies! It's super helpful. I'm really thinking about applying to more schools which would greatly increase my chance, but it's going to be hard for me to move away from Michigan. I mean, even putting those further away schools was tough.

I'm really going to have to make a tough decision here soon. When's the absolute latest you can add schools?

What is your GPA & BCP after your masters? If you're at least 3.3 I think you'll be ok.

There's something to be said about perseverance.

Some time in January, I think NYU and USC may be beg/mid Feb( you should double check what I just stated).

Regardless, if you wait until january, its gonna decrease ur chances significantly. You either apply now, or dont apply at all basically ( to more schools).

You need to apply to 15 schools like mr24 said, and do it NOW. There are lots of people applying now and everyday you delay, more people are getting their applications in.

I'm still banking on U of M considering I'm in state, know someone that is c/o 2014 there gathering a lot of insider info, and because they are such a research heavy school that may make my app may stand out a bit.

To get to 15 more schools, you'll need to add some that are in the midwest or the west.

Are you sure you really want to go into dentistry? Can you handle a motherload of debt and no income for 4 years? Think twice about what you really want out of life, and if you desire to become a dentist for valid reasons, you will get in.

With your sketchy undergrad GPA, I would apply to a couple backup schools. The University of Southern Nevada is in South Jordan, UT... and this was it's first year. Usually it is easier to get into newer schools. I would give it a try. The faculty there are really awesome and I loved SLC- but it was just too much money compared to the other schools that accepted me. I would add to your list... get a couple solid back up plans in there.

Just to provide you with some perspective..

My sciGPA : 3.1 and overallGPA : 3.1 .

My 3rd DAT AA: 23 TS:24

I have over 6000+ hours (5+ yrs) as a dental assistant in both private practice and community health.

I applied to 20+ schools, got 2 interviews, and 2 acceptances.

Please add more schools to your list for a realistic shot. If you want to be a U.S. trained dentist, then you must give up your geographic limitations.
