Well, I'm sitting at La Guardia airport right now waiting for my flight. It's 3pm, and my flight isn't until 8:20pm... man I'm bored!

The day started at 8am. Some people showed up early at around 7'ish, and were able to interview earlier. I suggest getting there as close to 8 as possible because you're going to end up waiting until 10:30am anyway for everyone to finish interviewing. There were around 15 interviewees.

I'm guessing that some faculty are required to interview students, so they come in the morning before they have to work, bang out an interview, and leave. I think I lucked out because I interviewed with the admissions director, and she ended up doing the Q&A and tour afterwards.

It was a very laid-back interview -- no stress at all. There was a list of questions that she asked, and would periodically ask me to explain in more detail. The hardest question was the "tell me about a time when you had to make an ethical decision." "Why should we accept you to our school?" was a difficult question too.

After the interview, there was a Q&A session. If you're a guy, you will realize that the girls dominate the Q&A because I felt like I couldn't get a question in at all. Thankfully, there was a guy from Canada that asked about the NYU myths spread around SDN concerning the 20% drop-out rate, difficulty getting patients, and crappy board scores. The director said that none of those are true and did a very good job explaining how the school works.

After the Q&A, we got a tour of the school. The NYU facilities are VERY nice. Almost everything was new, and I saw like a bajillion flat-screened LCD screens on every wall, ceiling, and sim-lab chairs during the tour.

Lunch, with the D-students, was held in the cafeteria in the basement floor. It was a very nice place, and the food was amazing! This is even more for me because my last interview was at VCU, and the food and cafeteria at VCU was unfortunately pretty bad.

Overall, the day went very well, and the school was amazing. The students really seem to like it there. I would love to go there, but my only concern in tuition and cost of living. One of the D2's told use that he splits a 2 bedroom apartment (3 blocks away from the school) with 2 other people, and the total rent is $4300 a month, not including utilities. 😱

Thank you for posting the details of your day! Where did you stay in terms of lodging/hotel, if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks for taking the time to write that post. Very helpful.

WORD. 🙂

I stayed with a friend who lives in Harlem. I know that hotel rooms in Manhattan are VERY expensive. The school is closest to the GREEN subway line at 23rd street. Maybe something far from Manhattan, but next to the green subway line would be cheaper? I don't know for sure, sorry.

Hi,

I was wondering what time the entire event ended.
I have a 8:50p.m. flight out of JFK that day so I was
concerned I might be cutting close.

Sounds like your interview went well. Good luck.

thanks

You're fine. We got out at 1pm, but I think it usually ends at 2pm. Lunch is the last thing of the day, so if you need to leave early, you can always eat fast and jet.

glad i have family in manhattan..instead of getting a hotel

Just to clairify - it's the green 4,5,6 train , not the green "G" train which will take you from nowhere to nowhere.

Don't forget to post this great info in the interview feedback section of SDN for all to enjoy!

Comgrats on the interview and good luck. 👍

Hey congrats on the interview,
I will also be interview there next week. I just had a question regarding the length of the actual personal interview. How long is it, how many questions are asked, do you have a set amount of time to answer question? Thanks in advance.

There's really no structure to the interview. Mine lasted about 25 minutes, while some people lasted over 30 minutes. A few only lasted 15 minutes. I was asked about 10 questions, but in those 10, I was asked more questions to further explain things. There's no time limit to answering questions, that's just silly.

What other types of questions did they ask?
Thank you so much for being so helpful!!

They just asked very typical questions... why dentistry, what are your strengths/weaknesses, tell me about yourself, tell me about a difficult time in your life, etc. If you go into the interview feedback, you'll see the questions that they'll probably ask you.

Hey thanks again for the info. I was just wondering if the interview only takes 30 minutes ie from 8-8:30, what does the rest of the day entail, because I though u said that ur interview ended at 10am. Thanks in advance

The interviews usually last about 20-30 minutes. We weren't done until 10am because it takes them a while to get through 15 applicants. There were maybe 6 interviewers total, and most of them left after only doing one interview. So we all had to wait for everyone to finish before we went on with the Q&A and tour.

hey guys i'm the canadian guy she was talking about...

well i found my interview to be a little different than everyone else's ...
first of all i was one of the losers to get there to early, actually i was the first there...u don't have to be there that early ...
i interviewed with Dr kosofsky a great guy really...the interview was very laid back and relaxed...but the thing is that it wasn't like other interviews...i mean i was only asked two questions: why dentistry, and explain the withdraws on my transcript. on average i would say it was about 20 mins long but mine was about 40 mins.
the school is amazing ... the technology and money in it is incredible..i honestly wonder if there is another school on earth with facilities that big. their sim labs are gigantic.
then we had lunch which was pretty good. i was out of the building by 12:15 and roamed the streets of Manhattan for the rest of the day...
overall the school is amazing and living in Manhattan is even more amazing...
best of luck to everyone and let me know if guys have any questions...

the Canadian guy

So if it was 40 min - What else did you talk about? Just curious...

Thanks again for posting all of your feedback guys...

well he did all the talking...he told me everything about the school...i honestly had about 8 questions going in and he answered all of them without me asking any...lol..
and that was all...
