Just making sure...

Seriously? No more than you have to be white to go to any other school.

Uhhh...

The undergraduate section of the university will probably consist of a majority of african americans, but I think the vet school ends up much closer to 50/50.

They just choose qualified applicants like any other school.

Now, to be fair, I think there is maybe... one? black person in all four years at OkSU right now. I'm sure that most schools probably have a few more than that. :d

yeah i know it sounds like a dumb question, but I was looking through the average GPA's of vet schools and I saw that Tuskegee was wayyyy lower (below 3.2) than all other vet schools. So naturally, I became pretty interested (as I never heard of a "safety" US vet school) and looked it up and read Tuskegee is "A historically black college that offers many programs of study as well as several research and study programs" and it was founded by Booker T. Washington. Plus, I couldn't find a picture of a white person on the whole website.

woah, pump the breaks. Didn't mean to make it sound like Tuskegee has a lower GPA because its a historically black college. Thats just how I became interested and looked it up. No love for racism.

Though I do kind of wish I wasn't white...

Glad you caught that...
Western is also relatively low (I remember seeign 3.2 on their website too) but with them they base a lot more of their admissions decisions on looking at applicants as a "whole person" and therefore are not too stat driven. Possibly Tuskeegee is the same way?

as an aside: snaps for you for figuring out TU's website, it confused the heck out of me when I was looking into it

I imagine that since there no one gets in-state tuition, that will naturally make it a second choice for many of those who have an in-state option. That will probably drive the average stats down a little.

Can you provide a link to where you found this information? I have yet to locate any statistics provided by the school. Their required minimum GPA is 2.75 but that isn't much different from the req'd min at a number of large state vet schools.

I can back up that statement, as I too remember seeing that statistic and I would love to provide the source, but unfortunately I cannot find it. I made a thread about it some time ago but only a few knew what I was talking about and none able to locate it, and I've not found it since.

It's a shame because it was an awesome PDF file. Broke down each school by number applied/interviewed/admitted, their sex, age, degrees, and the various averages (GPA, GRE, etc).

The VMSAR book has a similar sounding page and older versions were available on AAVMC's website for a while. The older ones are gone and the newer ones don't have Tuskegee on it, or any other non-VMCAS school's stats. I spoke with them directly early in the cycle and they told me they didn't release that type of information. Frustrating. Also, if you look at their candidate evaluation breakdown in the VMSAR book, it's missing 20%. It makes me wonder what the 20% accounts for- aside from diversity points or something similar.

Actually, I believe the book does still have that info. Table 12 in the 2009 edition has profile of professional first year dvm students (class of 2012). TUS is Tuskegee. Mean GPA 3.40 Western is lowest at 3.25.

That is in the AAVMC comparative data section (not the vmcas data).
