Thought I would share my experience... I honestly have to say it was one of the most ridiculous exams I have ever taken. It seemed 10% dental, 20% psychiatric, and 70% a combination of wtf/never seen this before in my life.

The typical question consisted of something absurd like "what is the best color".

My experience: lots of path, little pharm, know basic ortho, know steroid mechanisms, know lots about statistics (I minored in it and still didn't know several of the obscene questions asked), lots of patient based interactions, radiology and radiation damage, etc.

Day 2 is tomorrow, just thought I would share/bitch, as I've found similar posts helpful in the past.

I took day 1 yesterday too. Cases are this afternoon. I'm glad you found it to be as ridiculous as I did. I thought 10% I knew from direct studying, 10% I knew from my accumulated knowledge (outside of dental school), and 80% I had to make some sort of crazy educated guess -- usually able to limit the answer choices. But some questions talked about things I'd never heard of before. More implant questions than I thought there'd be. And lots of stats, patient psych, detailed path etc. Sigh...

This is scary! Taking mine next Tuesday! Good job making me nervous! How did the second day go?

That's the scary part. If I end up failing, I really don't know what else I would study... Maybe patient management?

My cases were pretty straight forward. Some stupid questions and a lot of ortho but not too bad. Better than the first day for me.

Honestly, I dont know what else I could have studied. I feel I could have had open Mosbys and still done the same... a few appliance questions, nicotine cessation, etc. Just really random crap, and even if I completely understood the case, the wording was just.... ambiguous as hell.

Good luck though! First aid ortho was nice.

Hi Guys,

I was in similar state of mind when I gave part II in Sept 2009. It was a disaster and I didnt realize where I went wrong. I had studied Dental Decks and ASDA question papers. But i failed. I scored 73. Then i decided to take a break from NBDE. Now i have done a lot of research and I am planning to re-appear for the exams in march. This is what I believe is required if you want to clear the exams in first shot.

1) Mosby
2) Dental Decks 2011-12 is better
3) Nbde first aid
4) American Board of General Dentistry ( AGBD)
5) Kaplan Question Bank.
