Kansas Class of 2014!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys- I'm new on here (SDN) and just got my Kansas acceptance! YAY!!! I will definitely be accepting for the fall so as far as questions about off-campus housing, bringing pets, etc- is there a forum for that? Thanks!

Do you go to UT? Everyone else in Austin got their letters except for me.. but I called Friday and they said I was accepted! I loved it way more than A&M.. but it's crazy that tuition is more than everything at a&m..

I got in! My letter came Friday while I was in Minnesota, so my mom called and told me the news. Didn't feel real until I had the paper in my hands!

This is so exciting and congrats to everyone else admitted!

So, I hate to be the annoying person, but for the people that are at Kansas State what's the best thing you like about it? I wasn't at the pizza party for interviewers so I didn't really get to ask a lot of questions about the school 🙁.

I really like the faculty and the organization of the coursework.

This is a great place to ask questions. What would you like to know?

well I haven't been accepted...got on the alternate list - but here's a question: Does anyone know how many alternates they go through, or how many are on the list? Just want to know how good my chances are!
And congrats to all those that did get accepted! I'm jealous 🙁

They tend to go through alot of alternates, I was called last year in June after not being offered an interview in the first round. It varies from year to year, but you certainly aren't out yet.

Spysis, if I may ask, how do you feel about the opportunities to find internships and research positions over the summer there? Are they pretty easy to get?

I know you're a first year... but maybe you can still shed some light. Do you think you get enough hands on experience? When does the hands on experience begin? Are there opportunities to work with animals during extra curriculars?

I'm really nervous about 3 years of labs/lectures. I don't want to get burnt out!

Are you speaking of finding them in Manhattan area specifically? Many of my classmates have already found summer internships/mentorships but they are scattered all over the country because many of us go home for the summer. As far as local area I think there are quite a few opportunities considerig the size of the town.

Officially there isn't a ton of live animal work until 3rd year, a few labs use students' personal animals for palpation and such, and we have a pony second semester during gross lab. However, and I think this is true with alot of schools, the experience is what you make of it. There are plenty of wet labs with student organizations and first years can shadow in the clinic. We are assigned a senior mentor and you can arrange to spend time working with them on their rotations. Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the information spysis. It makes me feel better if I do end up going and paying OOS tuition.

Hey, Spyisis- thank you for answering our questions! I was wondering what recommendations you have for off-campus apartment living. I know that I want to live alone and will be bringing two dogs (both under 20 lbs) with me. Other than that, furnished vs. unfurnished...? I'm not sure yet!

To CircusBear- yup, I'm a UT Alum... I also did a semester of vet school at SGU and then the loan situation got crazy and I couldn't get funding to go back so I ended up applying stateside, so compared to SGU's loans, K State OOS tuition doesn't seem bad at all 🙂!

Check out the housing link on KSU CVM site.
http://www.vet.k-state.edu/admit/housing/index.htm

Lots of postings there. Small dogs probably won't be an issue, I had a hard finding places that took dogs over 30 lbs. There is lots of housing around campus, both aparments and houses. Personally, I think that having a roomate is better than living alone, especially if you're not from the area. If you can find a fellow classmate to room with, even better. Its nice to establish a support system here.

It's been a while since I've posted here...but I'll thrown my hat in on the school too.

About the instructors:

The thing I like most about it is the fact that 95% of the first-year instructors really want you to succeed and do well -- and half of them are usually available after hours -- some of us in the class of 2013 have the opinion that one of our gross anatomy professors doesn't sleep.

I don't feel intimidated by any of the instructors, even the ones with lists of published research papers as long as I am tall.I always feel like I can ask questions (except with one instructor, but you only have him for about a month total first semester) and for someone as shy as I am, that's a pretty big feat.

Oh, and almost all of our professors are funny (whether they intend to be or not).

Misc:

We get free coffee/tea in the library!
The library has these really comfy leather reclining chairs to sleep in as well as a big Poof chair (that we call the cocoa puff)
Manhattan, while small, is a nice town. I went to K-State for undergrad, so it is a place where you can live for four years.

The only thing is, Manhattan does not have a public transport system, so be prepared to either bike, drive (by yourself or via carpool) or walk to school.

Well, I think I've decided I'll be at KSU next year! Out of the schools I visited, I felt most at home there and kept having to remind myself I that might not get the chance to return. I'm so happy that I do have the chance -and am returning!

Congrats on deciding! I'm still waiting for UF (my in-state), but if that falls through I will definitely be joining you at KSU. 🙂

So as much as it completely breaks my heart...I'm going to decline K state. I can't justify paying OOS tuition when I got into my IS...no matter how amazing the school is! Hope this helps someone else!!

Has anyone else decided on Kansas yet? I guess many people are still waiting for news from their IS... it shouldn't be long now though. Tomorrow is the first day of March!

I am super psych'd about my acceptance to K State! :soexcited:I will be accepting my seat, but am also on the wait list for my IS. If (and it's a BIG IF) I get pulled from the wait list, I will be accepting at my IS instead, which means that there may be a seat for someone else in the future. I am not nearly as excited to attend my IS school, but I can't ignore the IS tuition. As it is right now, I am about 95% or more certain that I will be in Kansas in 5 months!! The only thing that sucks is that my husband can't come with me, and I am not looking forward to being separated for 4 years 🙁. I also have to leave some of my "kids" behind. I will be bringing 2 of my cats, if everything works out, so at least I won't be totally alone in a new place.

I know Kansas State usually goes pretty far down their alternate list, but anyone know how many they usually put on the alternate list?

Just wanted to say that I will be accepting my offer at KSU and can not wait! I loved it there and loved all the students. Everyone in the area seemed laid back and super nice! Nothing at all like most people in New England. I've only toured Cornell and Tufts but the students there were a bit.... uptight and cut throat. Loved the vibe I got from Kansas. Can't wait to meet all of my future classmates! 😀

Gratz on the decision, cant wait to meet some of you first years 😀

Currently, I am still waiting to interview at UF(my in-state), but the thought of having to spend another 4 years here makes me 🙁 for a variety of reasons. I really loved Kansas State, everything they do just seems to fit what I want for vet school. However, I'll be relying solely on loans. For those of you also relying heavily on loans, what repayment plan are you planning to do? Because it seems like the standard repayment is out of the question. I guess paying loans for 25 years will be the only choice. :scared:

Well, since I was placed on the alternate list at Oregon State, seems I will be joining Kansas C/O 2014! I did LOVE LOVE LOVE the school while I was there and left thinking KSU was my number one choice anyway. Looking forward to meeting all of you!! 😀😀

I was placed on the alternate list at IL, which was the only school really that was competition with KSU for me, so looks like I'll more than likely be joining KSU's c/o 2014. 🙂

When I get all of my paperwork for Western, I'm declining KSU. Hopefully the waitlist will move a little.

Does anyone know of places in the Manhattan area where dogs can run off-leash safely and legally? My pup loves to run, but I don't trust her off-leash in places with busy roads.

Congrats to everyone who got in! I'm new here, and will also be entering KSUCVM in the Fall 🙂.

I did my undergrad at K-State, so if anyone has questions I can probably answer them.

Willowhand-there is a park called Top of the World where dogs are allowed to run freely. It's not totally fenced in, but the side close to the busiest (it's all relative haha) road is fenced. I can show you where it is when you get here, my dog would love a playdate!

Also, I have a room available in my house starting in August that I thought someone here may be interested in. PM me for details!

I can't wait to meet you all in the Fall!!!

Would anybody know when KSU does their financial aid packaging? I haven't gotten any info from them since I submitted my FAFSA.

Willowhand, there is a dog park about 10 minutes away near Tuttle park. It is a designated park with fences and all. Usually once a week like 10-12 of us first years students take our dogs there.

As far as financial aid, I have got an email from the school that they got my FAFSA and my financial aid is ready to be approved and such. I just have to go online and accept the award. Don't be afraid to call the school and ask.

Congrats to all the future Wildcats! 🙂

I'm also still in need of a roommate--I posted more details on the KSU Housing thread--PM me if you're interested. 🙂 (Found my current roommate on SDN last year but he's getting married!)

Thanks for the dog park info, pointerspice and robert007 🙂

I have also not received any fin aid package yet. I plan on waiting til after the Easter holiday and then emailing to inquire about it...

I just called them today. They say that they will not begin packaging till after we submit our deposits. However, the main loans available (Federal Stafford/Grad PLUS) will be available regardless of when financial aid is given.

hey guys, i just sent out my acceptance letter, i'm so excited!!!! i'm still in shock that i got in. congrats to everyone! anyone from connecticut/ the new england area? and what are people doing about housing?
yay k-state c/o 2014!!!!!🙂

congrats to everyone that will be joining KSU in the fall, i can't wait to meet the first years!

My deposit is going out with the mail today. 🙂 I'm excited to meet you all!

Sending in my deposit with the letter today as well! Hope to meet lots of great people in the fall! 😀

My parents have been looking to invest in real estate somewhere, and while we were visiting KSU it occurred to my dad that the decent demand for housing -and possible increase, due to the NBAF's arrival- might make Manhattan a good place to buy something. They would also have the services of an onsite manager (me!) available for free, and would be able to save me the cost of renting a place. Good deal all around 👍 So right now my parents are out in Kansas to see if there is a suitable place.

Where I am going with this is that there is a distinct possibility that we will be looking for tenants for either rooms in a house or an apartment in a multi-family home sometime soon. We do not know for certain if we have anything yet, but I wanted to give you all a heads-up in case this goes through. We like the idea of renting to other vet students. If you are interested, please pm me or keep an eye on this thread for the next few weeks for further details.

Is that everyone who has accepted? If so, that makes me worry because there are already 118 on there.... and no room for me 🙁

How many seats did K-State have again? Ugh. K-State was my best chance🙁

Not sure about the total, but it was 60 OOS spots (Non-contract). The class size also seems significantly larger than previous years, I hope the class will still be tight-knit despite this.

Don't worry don't worry...the class will still change a bit as waitlist musical chairs begins....you still have a chance! :luck: :xf:
Thanks for the words of encouragement! 🙂 Applying is such a roller coaster ride of emotions. I just wish alternates were told our rankings so we knew our chances better. One week till the 15th!
